Question: [SPOILER ALERT for anyone who's fallen behind on Scandal] I'm a loyal reader of your column, and always enjoy hearing your well-thought-out and articulate opinions on TV's hottest topics. I'm writing to you for the first time now because I wanted to know your take on the latest installments of Scandal. I saw in your last column the tag line "Scandal is the new Revenge," and I agree Scandal has been far more gripping lately than Revenge. read more

Question: What's your take on the new FX drama The Americans? I'm sort of cautiously optimistic because I love several FX shows, but this one didn't grab me like Justified and the others have. I thought there was way too much action before I got any sort of character development — it drove me nuts to have to follow the opening sequence for so long without any context. I also found myself fascinated by the next-door neighbor/FBI agent (what is the story with his undercover assignment?!) and less so by Phillip (the husband), but Elizabeth (the wife) left me sort of cold. I hope it improves with more episodes. — Amy

Ask Matt: Cancellations (Last Resort, Ben and Kate), Smash, Switched at Birth

Last Resort

Question: While I'm not happy Last Resort was canceled, I would like to thank ABC and the producers for allowing this show to have an actual ending, with [SPOILER ALERT] Marcus showing his love for his country and sub by dying to make sure the Chinese didn't get it. Like you said in one of your daily reviews, any ending is better than a cliffhanger. I was satisfied with the ending. — Foster

The Thursday Playlist: The Last Resort, Big Gets for Katie, Kimmel, Archer's Bromance

Last Resort

Under the familiar heading of "shows gone too soon," ABC's robust, though at times berserk, military thriller Last Resort is the only failed freshman series from this season's underwhelming fall crop that I would argue deserved more of a chance — or at least a tryout in a more appropriate time period — to catch on as it figured out its sprawling narrative. With the great Andre Braugher and the appealing Scott Speedman leading a strong and (on the island at least) exotic cast, this action drama about a rogue nuclear sub standing up against a homeland gone haywire is unlike anything else on network TV. Which made it a risk, though one well worth taking, and at least ABC let the producers complete the initial 13-episode order, which now comes to a too-early, but let's hope satisfying, end (Thursday, 8/7c).

Ratings: Idol's Night 2 Steady; Parks and Recreation Rises

American Idol

American Idol's Thursday debut held steady with last year's numbers.

After posting its lowest regular-season premiere ever, Idol pulled in 16.2 million viewers and a 5.6 in the adults 18-to-49 demographic, down just a tenth from last year's Night 2 bow. The episode slipped just ...

Ask Matt: The Following, Elementary, Big Bang, Bones, Last Resort, Happy Endings and More

Kevin Bacon

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter!

Question: I rely on your advice for new shows, so is The Following worth watching? I love Kevin Bacon, but I have given up on The Mentalist because of the whole Red John thing. If they had laid that to rest when it appeared that they did, I would still be watching. It seems like this new show will be very similar, but I haven't heard enough to make a decision. What do you think? — Tom

ABC Boss on Fall Failures, Revitalizing Dancing and Looking forward to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovalani

For ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee, the Alphabet network's fall schedule was a bit of a mixed bag.

"We have a lot to shout about and we also have a lot to do," Lee told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter TV previews on Thursday. The network, which finished 2012 in third place behind NBC and Fox, struggled to launch new shows  -- new dramas Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue were canceled; Nashville is solid, though Lee wishes he had more viewers in the 35-to-49 demographic — and saw previous ratings juggernaut Dancing with the Stars slide to new lows. "Turns out people like to... read more

Thursday Playlist: Sherlock vs. "M" on Elementary, Scandalous Madness, 1600 Penn, More

Aidan Quinn, Jonny Lee Miller

"A simple moniker for a complicated monster." That's how a rattled Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) describes "M.," his nemesis from across the pond, whose bloody M.O. is on display in a New York crime scene that threatens to send the genius sleuth off the deep end into rogue vigilantism in a first-rate and pivotal episode of CBS' enjoyable Elementary (10/9c). Even an amateur Sherlock-ian knows what that "M." stands for and signifies: "The greatest puzzle you'll ever come across," taunts an adversary.
