The Joy of Sets: Get Your Gay Pride On!

Brad Rowe courtesy Regent Releasing, Joanna Lumley courtesy BBC, Reichen

Between the apparent pick-up appeal of airport bathrooms, Christian Siriano and his hot tranny messes, California’s same-sex marriage ruling and the new “Sex and the City” movie, it’s been a very interesting year for the GLBT scene. And I mean interesting in a cool way. Like somehow the whole “all men created equal” stuff may start meaning something. So I figured, with gay being the new bitch, which was the new black last Spring (thank you, Tina Fey), and June being Gay Pride Month, I thought it was only appropriate to devote a little time to shows on DVD that are as fabulous as the fans who make them must-see...Dante’s Cove — Season Three just hit stores and lemme tell you, when I first heard that Amazing Race fame-seeker Reichen Lemkuhl was joining the cast, it was not a good day. The show is campy fun with its mix of island passion and occulty plotlines (and lord alive is there flesh for all walks of life to enjoy), but did it need a realit... read more

The L Word to Come Out for a Final Season

The L Word by Paul Michaud/Showtime

Showtime has ordered a sixth — and final — season of The L Word, to start production this summer for an early 2009 run. Versus previous 12- and 13-episode seasons, this final salvo will last just eight weeks, an abbreviated stretch yet sufficient to wrap up the groundbreaking series. "We are enormously proud of the legacy of The L Word," says Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt. "The title of the show became part of the lexicon, and the breadth and reach of the characters and storylines are a testament to the talent of Ilene Chaiken and her incredible cast."What's your take? Would you prefer the lezcapades to continue? Is the timing just right? Or had the show's novelty already worn off? read more

The Truth Behind Paris Hilton's "Lesbian" Leanings

Paris Hilton by Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage.com

TV Guide has the definite word on the rumor heard round the world that Paris Hilton will showcase her talents on The L Word. And the word is... maybe. We're told that when Hilton showed up at the Sapphic series' Season 5 premiere, she told exec producer Ilene Chaiken that she'd love to be one of the L Word's lusty ladies. Chaiken in turn told her, "When we find out about a sixth season, we will consider you." In a Q&A with Parade.com, Hilton sort of ran with that polite semi-promise. "It was very nice of Paris to go up to Ilene," someone close to the show tells us, "but really, it was a very casual conversation." Showtime has not yet picked up the show for another cycle, but we hear the ratings are doing well enough that it's a likely bet. Sources also tell us that Hilton has been seen at more than one of the L Word-hosted, mostly lesbian Sunday soirees held at L.A.'s Falcon Bar. Now that's politicking for a role! — Ileane RudolphRelated:• Today's Top Videos; Paris H... read more

Jennifer Beals Talks About The L Word, Love Scenes and Flashdance

Jennifer Beals, The L Word

Now in its fifth season, Showtime's The L Word is back (Sunday at 9 pm/ET) with its latest forays into the girlfriends' loves, lusts and career problems, not to mention a women-behind-bars side story, a "Don't ask, don't tell" crisis and a starlet-on-the-make chronicle of Jenny's movie about sapphic life in L.A. We talked to Jennifer Beals (we've loved her since Flashdance), who plays the starchy though smashingly sensual art-school dean Bette Porter, about her character's romantic dilemma, going nude and, yes, playing a dancing welder back in the day. TV Guide: What are the big themes on The L Word this season?Jennifer Beals: For my character, it's loyalty and truthfulness. TV Guide: Which is a problem, since Bette bounces between two lovers — Jodi (Marlee Matlin) and, secretly, Tina (Laurel Holloma read more

The Joy of Sets: Damages, Tudors and Kick-Ass Cable Lesbians!

Glenn Close by Craig Blankenhorn/Sony Pictures TV, Jonathan Rhys Meyers by Jonathan Hession/Showtime, Jennifer Beals by Paul Michaud/Showtime

Three good things about the writers' strike:1) No more Bionic Woman to disappoint us.2) Pepito the Wonder Chihuahua gets more "me" time.3) More chances to catch up on kick-ass cable shows on DVD!And let me tell you, that last one is a biggie, considering that a few cable shows I had to skip out on because of too many TiVo conflicts have just hit the shelves. One of them being FX's stellar, chilling Damages, which features quite possibly the single greatest performance of the last season. Is Golden Globe winner Glenn Close's Manhattan litigator Patty Hewes ingenious or pure evil? I'm not sure yet, but she is delicious nonetheless and I am having a hoot finding out.Centered around an Enron-type class-action suit against billionaire Arthur Frobisher — played with demonic menace by Ted Danson — the show should be about the case, since nobody does trial-angst better than Close (see Jagged Edge). But instead of courtrooms, we get boardrooms and some seriously twisted detours, co... read more

Premise: The lives of a group of lesbian friends in L.A. make for a sexy and stylish cable drama that tackles provocative issues (such as gender confusion, prejudice and gay parenting) with wit and grace, though with an occasional tendency to resolve story arcs a bit too neatly.
