L Word Spawns Reality Series

L Word

Since that L Word spin-off died before it even hit the ground, Showtime is taking a different approach to serving its same-sex-oriented audience: a reality show.

The network has ordered nine episodes of The Real L Word: Los Angeles, which will chronicle the lives of six lesbians, Variety reports. (Think Real Housewives with lesbians.)

Tim Robbins Drama Passed Over by Showtime

Tim Robbins

Now Tim Robbins really has something to complain about.

Despite good buzz for the speechifying actor's pharmaceutical drama pilot, Possible Side Effects, Showtime is taking a pass.

At least Robbins is in good company: The cabler has passed on all four pilots it ordered this outing. The other three are the L Word spinoff starring Leisha Hailey, the Matthew Perry/Peter Tolan comedy The End of Steve, and the comedy Ronna and Beverly, from a team that includes Weeds creator Jenji Kohan. read more

The second-season opener simmers with an unsettling intensity and gripping, jaw-dropping drama. GLAAD Award Nods Acknowledge Both the Surreal and Real

Nelsan Ellis (True Blood), Ken Marino (Reaper) and Sean Penn (Milk)

Joining the Oscar-nommed biopic in that race are Brideshead Revisited, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, RocknRolla and Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Among the TV contenders, ABC leads the pack with six total nods, though Grey's Anatomy and its revolving door of gay/bi-curious femmes is nowhere to be seen. Instead, the Outstanding Drama race pits Brothers & Sisters against ... read more

Jon Wolfe Nelson Readies for L Word's Final Sign-off

Jon Wolfe Nelson

The L Word isn't just for the ladies. Sure, guys have been on the groundbreaking Showtime series, but none have truly had the lasting stay or impact like Tom Mater has. Originally intended as a guest star/interpreter for Marlee Matlin's character, Tom, played by Jon Wolfe Nelson, has since found himself part of the love mix with his relationship with transman Max (Daniela Sea). And with the sixth and final season approaching (premieres Jan. 18 at 10 pm/ET), things between them are just going to be more "extraordinary," Nelson teases to TVGuide.com. Find out what else the actor — a real-life interpreter — has to say about the last season, being the drama's sole source of testosterone and if he'll be part of the spinoff.

TVGuide.com: You're an interpreter. Is that how you got The L Word?
Jon Wolfe Nelson:
I've been an actor for many years and for about 15 years I've been a professional sign language interpreter. When I was in New York ...

Premise: The lives of a group of lesbian friends in L.A. make for a sexy and stylish cable drama that tackles provocative issues (such as gender confusion, prejudice and gay parenting) with wit and grace, though with an occasional tendency to resolve story arcs a bit too neatly.
