New TV Hits Bring Old Shows to DVD... Or Do They?

Chyler Leigh by Evan Agostini/Getty Images, Scott Garfield/ABC

There's no doubt about it: New TV hits can bring old, short-lived shows to DVD.Just ask Taye Diggs, who's hot enough in Private Practice that his 2006 effort, Day Break, will hit stores at the end of this month. Or Kim Raver: Her old show, Third Watch, was in hugely high demand for a DVD release... but the studio didn't actually pull the trigger on getting it out (early last month) until Raver was cast in the new series Lipstick Jungle. Christina Applegate is doing well with Samantha Who?, so naturally more season-set releases are getting dug up for Married... with Children (Season 8 hits in a couple of weeks). Ditto for Party of Five, which finally returns to DVD later this month, thanks to Matthew Fox's current hit show, Lost. (Jennifer Love Hewitt's good-enough turn in Ghost Whisperer doesn't hurt there, either!)This phenomenon is not only limited to cast members, either. With Heroes having hit superpower levels in the ratings, is it any wonder that creator Tim Kring's previous s... read more

I was intrigued to hear that ...

Question: I was intrigued to hear that the creative team behind Dead Like Me is producing the new Pushing Daisies. And since Tony Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth is in the cast, I can't be more excited for this show. I find her to be one of the most underrated talents in television and film. Producers are now choosing their actors from the Broadway community (i.e., Sara Ramirez) more than ever. Considering Chenoweth's career as a popular character actress in film and television (remember her show Kristin?), it will be interesting to see how her persona comes through and is challenged by this character. Answer: As I've been telling everyone, and as I reported again in the last days of the TCA press tour, Pushing Daisies is easily my favorite pilot of the new fall crop. Besides Chenoweth, the cast also includes stage vets Swoozie Kurtz, Ellen Greene and, as the romantic leads, theater-trained Lee Pace (who was also seen in Bryan Fuller's Wonderfalls) and Anna Friel (Broadway's read more

Hills' Angel, Lauren Conrad, Tells All!

Lauren "LC" Conrad, The Hills

When Lauren Conrad, star of MTV's Laguna Beach spin-off The Hills (Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET), dropped by the TV Guide offices on Monday, the questions came fast and plenty, as staffers sought out the scoop on her reality series. What's the deal with Heidi? What's happening with Jason? And what's the 411 on the LC-Kristin rivalry? Although Lauren seemed to have heard this particular reporter's comment on her resemblance to big-screen funny girl read more

Your Veronica Mars Questions Answered!

As a narrator, Kristen Bell's Veronica Mars has been a bit quiet lately. But why?

With only three more new episodes left of UPN's Veronica Mars (Tuesdays at 9 pm/ET) this season, every viewer wants to know: Who was behind the bus crash? While Mars creator Rob Thomas may not reveal that big twist in his latest exclusive Q&A, he does answer plenty of other burning questions submitted by TVGuide.com readers about the possibility of a Veronica-Weevil romance, her long-term future, how fans have influenced the show and much more. Question: How shocked are we going to be when we find out who was behind the bus crash? — DerekRob Thomas: I wish I knew. I like a world in which 10 to 20 percent of viewers "get it right." At that point, I feel like it's shoc read more

The Bachelor: Paris So the women...

The Bachelor: Paris So the women are back and they might be the cattiest bunch ever. I do enjoy the women-tell-all reunions. It's so much fun watching the gals try to polish their images after they realize that the cameras really were rolling 24/7. I can't believe they turned on Susan like that. She was one of their own, and they made her cry. So not cool. Was Susan acting? I dunno, but between her waterworks skill and her good looks, I'm sure the soaps or Maxim will come calling soon. Kristin — yeah, it was the teeth. You know, <sarcasm> I'm surprised Ali G. skipped the reunion </sarcasm>, but her presence didn't, and we got to see that very special clip one last time. Thank you, ABC. Totally didn't recognize Yvonne with he read more

24All right, Fox, I've got a couple of bones to pick with you. First of all, you've completely spoiled me rotten with this four-hour premiere in just two nights — how am I supposed to cope for a whole week without another episode? And like it's not enough that you've totally got me wrapped around your finger, then you have to go and rub it in by showing Golden Globes press-room footage during the commercials, while I'm TiVoing it to watch 24 "live." Look, we spoiler-free freaks here on the West Coast have a hard enough time maintaining media blackouts with the time delay — you're gonna have to help us out a little. You won already; I'm watching your network. I've seen the Idol and Bones promos approximately 300 times in between all the Kiefer-based butt read more

The Bachelor: Paris At first I...

The Bachelor: ParisAt first I wasn't so keen on ABC's rebroadcast of the premiere episode with never-before-seen footage. How manipulative of them to strong-arm viewers into catching a repeat! I was pleasantly surprised, however, by this new and improved version. It helped me catch my breath and settle into the show by getting a second look at now-familiar faces with some added insight to my first impressions. Plus it gave viewers more footage with which to mock Allie G., this season's desperate suitor. I loved that, behind closed doors, Travis' confessional reactions mirrored my own. His unbridled giggles at Allie G.'s use of the word "reproduction" was priceless. I mean really, "Who says that?!" Who, indeed. And who goes on a dating s read more

Laguna Beach OK, don't get me...

Laguna BeachOK, don't get me started. I'm already a little teary that the gang's big good-bye is also my last Watercooler column. For a while, at least. The big, new all-color TV Guide needs a tad more of my time. But I should be back by the time Lauren hits The Hills. Which, by the way, looks sooooo good. Oh! And the third-season sneak peek with her little sis and that Kami chick? Hello. Girls with bad hair and guys with great bodies? We are so on for summer. Until then, I humbly offer this week's "Thanks for Being the Best Readers EVER" dunzo survey. Truly, I heart you all.1) Do guys like Steeephen really think they can play a pair of girls against each other for two years and not be considere read more

We. Wuz. Robbed!! All week long,...

We. Wuz. Robbed!! All week long, MTV's been feeding us promos of the big two-seasons-in-the-making Kristin-Lauren confab. And what did we get? Nuthin'. Bupkiss. A flyby that consisted of a few awkward glances and one unsurprising bailout by Steeephen. Damn, this should have been huge. The hugest. Instead, I'm all salty and hatin' on everyone. Except for the kids, because we love them. So I guess it's time for the "One Week Before the Commercial-Free Kiss Good-bye" survey! 1) Jason the Chronic Cheater: Good guy or self-destructive? And who were those chicks advising L.C.? They looked like a before-and-after of Ashlee Simpson's latest run-in with L'Oreal No. 36.2) Um, when should we tell Talan that counseling J-Wahl on winning back his girl was gayer than Pepito the Wonder Chihuahua's cable-knit roll-neck sweater (which, FYI, is totally fetching with his bone structure).3) Do we think Steeephen will finally rea read more
