DVD Pick of the Week: May 22, 2007

Wow, May 22nd is a great day for TV-on-DVD, with plenty to choose for everyone. We have animated shows suitable for kids (Avatar Season 2, Volume 3; Legend of the Dragon Season 1; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 1, Volume 1; Stuart Little; Hero High), and an animated show NOT for kids (Afro Samurai). There are comedies (Kitchen Confidential: The Complete Series; Scrubs Season 5), dramas (The OC: Season 4; The Magnificent Seven Season 2; Roots), and even a sci-fi series (Kyle XY Season 1). Yup, May 22nd is a good day for TV-on-DVD (view the complete release schedule at TVShowsOnDVD.com).My pick for this week is a show I've loved since I first saw it, Scrubs. This 3-disc set includes all 24 episodes from season 5 along with 3 commentary tracks - "My Big Bird" (Neil Flynn and Randall Winston), "My Way Home" (Zach Braff) and "My Lunch" (John C. McGinley and John Michel), "My Way Home" extended 100th episode, My 117 episodes: 5 seasons of Scrubs, Deleted Scenes and Alternate Lines. ... read more

The recent release of ...

Question: The recent release of Kidnapped on DVD and the upcoming release of Kitchen Confidential, both shows that didn't last more than five or six episodes, surprised me and left me wondering about more creative uses of the TV-show box set. It must be lucrative for the production companies or they wouldn't do it. Do you think that in the next four to five years, high-quality, creative, outside-the-box TV shows that don't make it on their network will instead go straight to DVD? I think it would be great if there were limited-run miniseries that were heavily promoted (maybe even a one-episode run on network TV) but weren't then dumped onto networks and time slots where they can't possibly survive. This proposal would also solve the recent problem of the serialized dramas that we all know won't make much sense after one season (Reunion, Day Break) while still rewarding creativity and experimentation. Since you know more about the industry than I do, I would love to know what you think. read more

Bones So I had to suspect that...

BonesSo I had to suspect that Agent Kenton was bad from the moment he walked on screen. I mean it was almost a little bit of déjà vu seeing David Boreanaz and Adam Baldwin together again. Except this time around, things didn't end quite so badly for David B. Booth, who was actually able to stop the bad guy from killing Brennan, instead of fighting off a seemingly insurmountable flock of demons from hell in an attempt to save the world. But I digress to the good old days of Angel, when I'm really supposed to talk about how delighted I am for an exciting episode of Bones in its nice new time slot. Brennan nearly gets whacked by the mob, she and Booth dance and sing to Foreigner's "Hot Blooded," there are some really grody-lookin read more

Premise: Sitcom about the head chef of a haute New York restaurant and his `renegade crew of colleagues.' Based on the memoirs of real-life chef Anthony Bourdain, who says `I love the sheer weirdness of the kitchen life.'
