Forty kids, ages 8-15, attempt to create an operating town in 40 days without the help of adults in a former New Mexico ghost town. The kids are responsible for all chores, including cooking, cleaning and running businesses. They also establish their own rules and set up a government. They hold a town-hall meeting at the end of each episode to talk about issues and to determine which one should win the Gold Star, worth $20,000.
A Winter of TV Discontent? | Roush Dispatch | 12/4/2007
Just a thought: If the strike lasts much longer, do you think CBS' Big Brother house has room for all of us? I joke, of course, but I also fear that if things don't get resolved soon, it's going to be a long, cold winter indeed for fans of good old everyday regular non-reality TV.In the last few days, weve seen cliff-hanger episodes of Desperate Housewives and Heroes that felt like season finales, and for all we know, thats what they might be, if production doesnt resume early...

No More Blog | Kid Nation Show Blog | 11/8/2007
Hi, friends! My apologies, but it turns out that last week was the final blog for Kid Nation. For those of you still watching, I hope you enjoy the rest of the season! Now go watch The Next Great American Band. I need some comments over there, too! And thanks for your comments these past few weeks.

Rating a New Round of Reality | Roush Review | 11/7/2007
Now is not the time to be a reality-TV snob. The reality of the TV business is that this genre is here to stay ? and it may come in especially handy during the writers' strike. Like every form of TV, reality is capable of exhilarating highs: This fall, I'd include Dancing with the Stars (with its most appealing cast to date), Survivor (with its exotic China backdrop) and the recently returned Emmy champ The Amazing Race. Naturally, there are also innumerable lows (most celeb-reality). Here's a...

Episode Recap: "The Root of All Evil" | Kid Nation Show Blog | 11/1/2007
This is the toughest blog of the entire season for me. Why, you ask? Well, other episodes of Kid Nation might not have been great, but at least they were entertaining. This was a train wreck. So I stamp the big black advisory sticker over this first paragraph and tell you that if you are reading this and going to get annoyed by some negativity, then you might just want to stop now and come back next week. However, if you also thought this week was a train wreck, by all means read to the end....

Episode Recap: "Bonanza Is Disgusting" | Kid Nation Show Blog | 10/25/2007
This week on Kid Nation, "The Taylor & DK Show." This is truly getting out of hand with Taylor. The only way you can possibly like this girl is if you too are a lazy, whiny 10-year-old beauty queen. Every time I see her that song pops into my head, you know that one that goes, If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife.... Can you just picture what this is leading to? Six years from now were going to see Taylor on that sweet-16...

Episode Recap: "Viva la Revolucion!" | Kid Nation Show Blog | 10/18/2007
Its about time the kids of Bonanza City got the chance to change the leadership of this city. Weve been clamoring for this for weeks now. I have to admit that I was disappointed that each group only got to vote for their own leader. It makes sense in a way, but it would have been nice to see how the vote went if everyone voted for one person per team color. Bad for TV, good for Bonanza. At the same time, though, the elections went pretty well overall. For Green, Laurel has been a...

Ask Matt | 10/12/2007
The Oct. 3 episode of Kid Nation featured most of the kids staying up late partying and drinking soda. Wait: not drinking soda, but chugging it. It was disturbing to see all these kids drinking as much soda as possible to the chant of, "Chug, chug, chug!" I can't help thinking that the producers of the show are egging on the concept that not only is drinking cool, but college drinking, bingeing in particular, is awesome. Considering that this is a family show, what must parents think?

Episode Recap: "Bless Us and Keep Us Safe" | Kid Nation Show Blog | 10/11/2007
Although I wasn't around last Wednesday night to recap, I did end up watching the episode on Saturday night and then reading all your comments. One of the things that's interesting now that we have a few episodes under our belts is that the show is really giving off a pretty negative vibe. I mean, 75 percent of the comments last week were negative in one form or another, from talking about Taylor, to Greg's attitude and the whole drinking-shots issue. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that,...

The Push Worked for Daisies | Roush Dispatch | 10/4/2007
The early ratings are in, and it looks like the combination of aggressive promotion and laudatory media buzz paid off for the first round of ABCs delightful Pushing Daisies, which handily won its time period Wednesday and is off to a solid start. Honestly, though, if any of the reality alternatives had prevailed (especially CBSs snooze-inducing Kid Nation and the is-that-still-on stupid briefcase show over on NBC), I think Id be wearing a black armband in to work for the rest...

My apologies friends, but there will be no blog this week. Duty called at the job and unfortunately I was unable to watch it tonight. But I'll be back next week with a blog for you to chat up. But don't let that stop you from talking about the show yourself. Recap, comment etc... I open the string for you have at it. Until next week, friends.

I wasn't planning on watching Kid Nation, but according to some reviews, it wasn't quite as evil as I thought it would be, and I ended up watching it online. I did enjoy the episode, even though I still take issue with parents willing to put their kids on reality TV shows. Another big problem I had was with the portrayal of Greg. It seems that quite a few people are already viewing him as a bully or immature, but I thought Greg acted like a typical 15-year-old boy! My youngest brother just ...

Episode Recap: "To Kill or Not to Kill" | Kid Nation Show Blog | 9/27/2007
So theres 39 kids left going into Day 5 and the first task they are greeted with is killing chickens for dinner. Quite predictably, the youngest of the kids think the chickens are cute and dont want to kill them, while the older kids dont seem to mind very much at all. Emelie leads the charge to save the chickens by locking herself in the chicken coop with a couple other kids and threatening to go home if they are killed. Older kids like Greg, whos worked with a butcher...

The New Season: Wednesday Heats Up | Roush Dispatch | 9/26/2007
First, an important public-service announcement: Tonight on The War, we relive D-Day, a momentous turning point in military history brought to vivid life by those who lived through it, courtesy of Ken Burns' masterful way with documentary narrative. I know this is premiere week, and Wednesday is the most competitive night for new shows this season, but I wouldn't be doing my duty if I didn't remind everyone that this is TV you not only shouldn't miss, but it's an experience you'll never forget....

Ratings: Kelsey Grammer Beats Up on CBS' Kid | Today's News: Our Take | 9/20/2007
Wednesday's ratings highlights: This just in.... Fox's Back to You, starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, premiered to 9.44 million total viewers, winning its 8 pm half hour (in key demos, as well). 'Til Death lost 18 percent of that lead-in audience, drawing 7.76 mil. CBS' Kid Nation opened its frontier doors to 9.07 million. But did it deserve all the controversy? Vote here. UPDATE: CBS will rebroadcast the Kid Nation opener Saturday at 8 pm. Last Comic Standing...

Kid Nation Hardly a Bonanza | Roush Dispatch | 9/20/2007
Welcome to "Survivor Jr." Or maybe we should call it "Little Brother." Better yet: "Oh Brother." One thing I wouldn't call CBS' Kid Nation is appointment TV. At least not on the basis of the opening episode, which treated me to the sight of a homesick 8-year-old boy having a panic attack. I wanted to give little Jimmy a hug when he snuffled, "I'm only 8. I'm a third-grader. I think I'm too young to be doing this," a sentiment he later clarified by saying, "I want to be older to do this."You...

Episode Recap: "I'm Trying to Be a Leader Here" | Kid Nation Show Blog | 9/20/2007
Welcome to the first Kid Nation blog!Im assuming that just like me, you are watching this show and reading this blog because the overall concept of this is just so crazy that you had to at least give it a shot and see what all the hype was about. Forty kids building a town from scratch with no parents is intriguing. I cant really tell yet if this is going to be a total debacle or the feel-good story of the year but something tells me theres going to be no middle ground. Either...

The Wednesday Battle Begins | Roush Dispatch | 9/19/2007
Is it possible that this season, Wednesdays are the new Thursdays? An incredible amount of high-profile new programming nine freshman series in all will be introduced to the Wednesday prime-time schedule over the next few weeks, and when the dust settles, I can only hope a few of my new favorites will survive.First up are CBS, the CW and Fox, launching their newbies a week before the official season begins. The biggest headlines so far have been generated by CBS' unseen-by-critics...

Ask Matt | 9/17/2007
Maybe I'm being a little simplistic, but is there a reason why all of the networks start their fall schedule during the same week? I seem to remember the Emmys leading into the start of the new season, but this year there's a week between the awards and the fall kickoff. Why wouldn't a network like NBC, which is in need of some viewers, give its new series a boost by starting them a week or so before everyone else? Instead of facing off against brand-new episodes and shows, why not start off by...

As a fan of your column, I know you dislike Big Brother, and I won't try to sway your opinion, but I have to say that I've been disappointed by how CBS has handled recent controversies about their reality shows like BB and Kid Nation. Every year I expect one or two contestants to be irksome and display some repugnant behavior, but as I'm sure you've heard, many contestants this season have been either vapid, racist, sexist, abusive or all of the above. Amber made deplorable comments about ...

The New TV Season: Burning Questions Answered! | The Biz | 9/5/2007
The 2007-08 season is starting soon and there are many questions looming. After consulting a few network insiders, The Biz is going to try to answer a few of the big ones. Will Private Practice be the next Joey?Ah, the much maligned spin-off. The answer is no. The audience still has a lot of goodwill towards Grey's Anatomy. ABC has surrounded it on Wednesday with two of its strongest pilots, Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money. It has a solid night, with Private Practice as a presold tent pole...
