Season 1, Episode 5 Thomas Jefferson

First Aired: November 4, 2002

Burns' two-part 1997 biography of Thomas Jefferson concludes with a review of Jefferson's presidency and his life after politics, when he founded the University of Virginia and corresponded with long-time foe John Adams. Also considered: Jefferson's relationship with slave Sally Hemmings (she was his “substitute wife,” says a descendant, though historians interviewed see it differently). Commentators include George Will, Gore Vidal, John Hope Franklin, Clay Jenkinson, Natalie Bober and Garry Wills. Ossie Davis narrates.
