First of all, how wonderful was it last week to hear the news that Season One of
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List was nominated for outstanding reality program? Certainly one of the
few positive things that came out of those nominations (don't even get me started). And since Kathy is an Executive Producer on the show, she can now always be referred to as the "Emmy-nominated Kathy Griffin," and I just love that. Now on to tonight's show....
Right away, it was strange to watch Kathy and Matt be all cheery on TV one night after the
Larry King Live appearance finally aired.
Poor Kathy. Even though these episodes were taped months ago, how ironic that she made a reference to trusting an accountant with her money. Anyway, I was looking forward to this episode since they've been referring to it for weeks - the Pom Pom dog from hell/Kathy in the rat suit episode! I'm an easy sell for dog-related tales, and this did not disappoint - the more reaction shots of Pom Pom with his one ear up, the better. Kathy interacting with Renate, the dog trainer killed me, starting with Kathy's comment about Pom Pom disappearing right when Renate got there: "Perfect timing. She's a sneaky little bitch."
More highlights:
- Kathy working the corporate event in front of her "nightmare demographic - middle-aged straight white men."
- Kathy referring to her "ass-crack sweat."
- Kathy's comment about having to perform for children: "It's awful. I have nothing to say to them."
- Jessica talking with a straight face about Pom Pom having explosive diarrhea in her office.
- Kathy saying "I hear that San Francisco is really starting to catch on with the gays." Uh-uh.
- Kathy about her super fan Mike Sullivan: "Every so often, you get yourself a bad gay. I'm sorry. They can't all be
Clay Aiken." I laughed so hard at that comment, I rewound my TiVo five times.
- Speaking of Mike Sullivan, Kathy saying she'd like
Jennifer Aniston (whom she referred to as simply "Aniston") to spend just 10 minutes with him and his friends: "Ten minutes. She's crying by Minute 3!"
- Kathy's comment about what
Andy Dick does to his assistants!!
- Kathy about trying to branch out and hang with more chicks like
Caroline Rhea and
Rachel True, since she only socializes with Matt and gay guys: "Every so often, I want to talk to someone with a vagina."
- Watching Kathy cringe through her judging gig on
Last Comic Standing. That's precisely why I don't watch the show and why I don't bother to watch her on it (I can tell she doesn't want to be there).
- Kathy suggesting the comedian with cerebral palsy "might've been faking it." (And before I get angry comments about it, since I only saw those brief moments and didn't know the facts, I, too, thought he was pretending - come on, didn't you?)
- Kathy's "
Inside the Actor's Studio moment" during her Learning Annex seminar. Who knew that
Stefanie Powers had such an effect on her? How nice of Ms. Powers to give Kathy's mom that
Hart to Hart talk so long ago.
Lowlights:
- I am so sure that Angelo guy made that rude camel-toe comment to Kathy, although Kathy's comeback line was the best: "That was the straw that broke the camel toe's back." (Speaking of
The Comeback, I was beyond ecstatic about
Lisa Kudrow's Emmy nom! I so miss covering that show for Watercooler.)
- Not really a lowlight, but more of a surprise that Kathy didn't make a
Queer Eye comparison after Designer Mike transformed the hotel suite, especially since her
QE appearance from weeks gone by is featured in next week's season finale. At least she said, "If you don't already have a gay visionary, I highly recommend picking one up."
Sadly, next week is the season finale, but here's an encouraging reply from my Bravo contact after I asked her how the ratings were for Season Two: "The ratings are strong, and the series grew in its third and fourth episodes. The fourth episode was the series high so far, so we're happy."
Music to my ears! So what did
you guys think of Episode 5?
