I'll start this out by saying that I worship the ground that
Kathy Griffin walks on, so you should expect me to say mostly nice things here. Kathy is one of those people who, if they recited the phone book to me, I'd laugh. I've seen Kathy perform her stand-up act several times, and I've had the pleasure of meeting her (she's just as hilarious in person). Why do I love Kathy so much? Because she says what's on her mind and she's the only one in Hollywood who has the guts to say out loud what most of us are thinking. When you watch her stand-up act, you become exhausted from laughing, but also from being shocked at what comes out of her mouth. Actually, your own mouth rarely shuts from all the gaping you do ("Oh no, she didn't!"). So I was obviously overjoyed when I heard that Bravo renewed
Kathy's show for a second season. My only complaint to Bravo - why only six episodes?
Tonight's season premiere was a great way to catch up from last season. Kathy has had some unfortunate things happen in her personal life, so I'm glad to see that she and hubby Matt are reconciling after filing for divorce. It's also good that they have the new dog Pom Pom to help get over the loss of the tragically departed Captain from the car accident. Too bad Pom Pom is a couch eater, though.
Some highlights from tonight:
- Kathy surprising the female fan who has degenerative rheumatoid arthritis.
- Kathy's "red-state tour" proved that she has fans in all of the states, even the nonblue ones.
- I now officially like
Tyra Banks after seeing her allow Kathy to poke fun at her (watching Tyra imitate Kathy imitating Tyra was awesome).
- Kathy's parents are an absolute riot - they remind me of just about all of my own relatives in Chicago, and I hope they are on each week.
- It's also nice to see Kathy's assistant Jessica back (she reminds me of a more glamorous version of Chloe on
24).
- Watching Kathy and Matt spread Captain's ashes over Runyon Canyon, Captain's favorite place to walk, was very poignant (made my roommate Jason cry).
- Kathy's obsession over who was bidding the highest on her eBay auction killed me, especially because she just knew it had to be a gay guy. The fact that the highest bidder bailed on her killed me even more.
Two lowlights:
- That overly excited fan (Dr. Hong) who got to go backstage to meet Kathy frightened me. Umm... when I said I worship the ground Kathy walks on, I was exaggerating. I love her, but not
that much.
- Most of this "reality" show of Kathy's I can believe. But I didn't believe it for a second that fewer than 10 people showed up for the ceremony when she was given the key to the city in Louisville, Kentucky. Not buying it. Every time I see Kathy perform stand-up, it's always in a huge theater and it's always sold out. Something tells me the Louisville event wasn't publicized that much just so that we'd believe that Kathy is actually on the D-list. Truth be told, she's on the C-list, but mama's movin' on up.
Can't wait for the remaining five episodes. But if they'd give us more, I'd
really have a reason to say "Bravo!"
