Maverick U.S marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) enforces the law his way in his Kentucky hometown, where he's exiled in the opener after killing a gun thug under questionable circumstances in Miami. "It was justified," Raylan insists. Raylan's first order of business:a white-supremacist (Walton Goggins) with whom he once mined coal who's suspected of robbing banks and blowing up a black church. Raylan must track down a prisoner who escapes while performing with the prison's bluegrass band at a benefit concert outside the walls. It turns out that he's a convicted bank robber with only three months left on his sentence. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), recovering from his shooting in a prison hospital, tells Raylan that he's a new man: "I am born again in the eyes of the Lord."
Raylan and Rachel are sent to L.A. to find a fugitive named Roland Pike (Alan Ruck), a drug-cartel accountant-turned-barrio dentist whom Raylan failed to capture once before and whose altercation with an obnoxious patient has landed him in the headlines. Unfortunately for Roland, his former drug associates are after him as well.
Raylan's father (Raymond J. Barry) is arrested following an altercation with a man who's renting a house he and Raylan's stepmother own, and Raylan must bail him out of jail. It turns out that the tenant has something to hide. Meanwhile, Raylan poses as a gardener to nab a fugitive hiding in a house.
A well-to-do Kentucky horse breeder is found dead from an apparent suicide, and his art collection is missing. As Raylan searches for the art, he must contend with the man's widow, who won't stop hitting on him.
A lifer (W. Earl Brown) headed to a supermax prison takes two guards hostage in the Marshal's office, and Raylan must defuse the crisis. Meanwhile, Ava's father-in-law (M.C. Gainey) is released from prison, and Ava is not happy to see him. And Winona returns home to find she has company: a man (Jere Burns) who says he's a home-security consultant. Winona is not happy to see him.
With Bo Crowder's meth operation ramping up, Art and Raylan try to enlist Arlo to infiltrate his gang. Boyd Crowder doesn't approve of his father's business, either. And Ava has a grudge of her own against Bo.
