Wal-Mart Blu-ray Player Promos a Net Cost Under $200 for Father's Day!

Blu-ray Disc

Next week, and just in time for Father's Day (Sunday, June 15th), Wal-Mart is making it much easier to afford a high-definition Blu-ray player! The original standard DVD format went on sale in the United States back in 1997, and consumers quickly shifted over to the new format from VHS. But in 1998, HDTVs went on sale, and every year since then the high definition sets have gained in popularity. But something was missing...hi-def on home video! While DVD was noticeably better than VHS, it was noticeably not-as-good as the hi-def broadcasts of TV shows and films that people could get from cable, satellite and over-the-air HD. Folks clamored for an HD home video format, and by February 2008 the Sony-developed Blu-ray Disc ("BD") format had just won a bitter hi-def format war. But at the time, prices of a BD player started at $400, and typically ran quite a bit higher.Beginning this coming Sunday, June 8th, Wal-Mart is kicking off their newly remodeled electronics departments in their st... read more

Inside the Justice League's Star-studded New Frontier

Justice League: The New Frontier courtesy DC Comics/Warner Bros.

The live-action Justice League of America movie is in limbo, but the popular comic-book super team gets a worthy screen adaptation in a new DVD-movie based on Darwyn Cooke's graphic novel. The New Frontier, which goes on sale Feb. 26, reimagines the origin of the JLA in the 1950s and early '60s, when fear of communism and alien invasion ran rampant. The team behind the latest DC Comics/Warner Bros. Animation straight-to-DVD movie worked hard to compress the six-issue comic series into a 75-minute feature. "The biggest challenge was deciding what would stay and what had to go," says director Dave Bullock. "There are a lot of great character moments in New Frontier and there were a lot of hard decisions to be made, just due to time factor." The finished product preserves the main unifying story: an alien menace that brings the world's greatest superheroes together for the first time. Still, it's the development of the characters — Superman and Wonder Woman debating how to respond... read more

Phil Morris Is Set for Blastoff, as Smallville's New Hero

Phil Morris with Tom Welling, Smallville

He wasn't in last week's "Justice" episode, but tonight TV veteran Phil Morris (Mission: Impossible) drops in on Smallville as J'onn J'onzz (pronounced "John Jones"), a familiar face from the world of DC Comics. Like Kal-El, J'onn is from a different planet — Mars — hence his other handle, the Martian Manhunter. Given that J'onn is a shape-shifter, many actors could have been hired to play the part, but Smallville scored by casting Morris, who brings a mature and guiding presence (something that Clark has needed since losing his dad) as well as a solid knowledge of the comic-book world. TVGuide.com: Wouldn't it have been appropriate for you to be in last week's "Justice" episode, which featured Green Arrow, Aquaman, Cyborg and Impulse?Morris: All those characters read more

Justice for TV's Wonder Women

Female comic-book characters have taken a beating on screen in recent years — and not just in the course of battling the bad guys. Despite big budgets and big stars, the dreary Elektra and the unintentionally campy Catwoman both failed creatively and at the box office.

Television hasn't done much better (at least not since the '70s when Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman was fighting for our rights in her satin tights). Birds of Prey, WB's mangled 2002 adaptation of a DC Comics series about a group of vigilantes, was plagued by cringe-inducing dialogue — "We ruled Gotham's nights and answered to no one but ourselves" — and cheesy special effects.

But on Saturday, June 4, two Birds of Prey characters, Huntress and Black Canary, get another chance on TV, headlining "Double Date," an exceptional episode of Cartoon Network's superhero cavalcade Justice League Unlimited. The script is by Gail Simone, who writes th read more
