It was a very merry Journeyman episode this week when Dan and Livia traveled to 1979 on Christmas Eve. It happened to be the night that Dan's present-day tyrannical boss took over the paper and the night before his father left his family. Not the best way to spend the holidays but it had a certain scrooge-like charm.
As things got underway, we caught a glimpse of Livia's life in the 40's and it seems she's got a new man. Despite her lingering feelings for Dan made obvious by the futuristic picture of the two of them at a baseball game, Livia seems to finally understand that Dan has moved on and has a family of his own in his own time. In 2007, the Vasser family was preparing to host a Christmas party at the house when Dan learns that he is part of a planned 25% staff cut at work. After unsuccessfully pleading with his boss' boss to save everyone's jobs, Dan is tossed into another wormhole and emerges at his office Christmas party in 1979.
While surveying the scene trying to find his mission, Dan met up with his father and was eager to give the man a piece of his mind the night before he was planning to ditch out on the family. Livia once again warned Dan that interfering with his own life in the past never ends well. Taking Livia's advice, Dan resumed his mission which he figured out was to investigate the death of the owner of the paper, Merritt Almbacher, which was set to occur that evening. While Dan went off to do his thing, Livia was getting harassed by an obnoxious drunk who refused to take no for an answer. Witnessing the harassment, Dan came to the rescue and forced the man to back off. The man introduced himself to Dan and Livia as Dennis Almbacher (the boss' son and a younger version of the man responsible for ordering the layoffs in 2007.) In a fit of anger over his past and present actions, Dan punched the daddy's boy out and disappeared into the future.
When he returned to his office in 2007, Dan questioned Nancy Stokes, the woman who (thanks to some intel from his brother) he learned was reportedly with Merritt Almbacher when he died. She was in denial that she had ever actually met the man and claimed that she was just a simple a copy editor back in '79. Meanwhile over at the Vasser home, Jack and Katie had to make excuses for Dan's absence at the party. In addition to covering for Dan, Katie was struggling to get over the trauma she went through in last week's episode. I dunnocall me crazy but perhaps throwing out the blood-stained apron would have been a good place to start. How'd she think putting it through the laundry and then wearing it to cook a Christmas dinner wouldn't spark bad memories? Eventually Katie got it together and did away with the apron altogether. Just to make her situation worse though, she was also dealing with an irritating mother-in-law who had some understandable animosity toward Katie due to the rift she caused between Dan and Jack. Mama Vasser quickly changed her tune however upon realizing that Katie and Zack had the same issue with Dan that she had with Dan and Jack's father. As the drama in the Vasser home rolled on, Jack and Theresa had their own issues to deal with. Throughout the evening, Theresa seemed noticeably distant as she stood around observing the interactions between the members of the Vasser family. She later revealed that this was because she found out she was pregnant with Jack's baby and has some concerns that the bizarre behavior of the Vasser family might be hereditary.
During one last trip back to 1979, Dan was quickly running out of time to get to the bottom of Mr. Almbacher's death. Making things more difficult, Dennis Almbacher tried to get Dan and Livia removed from the party but Dan's father quickly came to their defense. Livia agreed to search for Nancy so that Dan could have a chance to talk with his father one more time. When Dan entered his father's office, he found him canoodling with a fellow employee giving little thought to the family that was waiting for him to come home on Christmas Eve. Dan and his father discussed what it means to be a father and tried desperately to make it clear to his dad that leaving without a word is the most selfish and unforgivable thing he could ever do. He left the office and caught up with Livia outside of Almbacher's office. Dan busted into the office and found jr. pouring himself a drink watching his father die from a heart attack. Mission accomplished!
Dan returned to 2007 and blackmailed the owner of the paper for allowing his own father to die and then bribing Nancy to pretend that she was in the office when the old man passed. Almbacher had no other choice but to let the staff keep their jobs. When he got back to his own family's Christmas party, Dan questioned Jack about the night their father left and asked what he could remember. Jack told Dan how the night their dad left he woke them up and explained that he was leaving. I guess that's better than vanishing without a word?! And so it was Merry Christmas for everyone.
Now that we know there are just 2 episodes left of this show, we need to get some answers! Dr. Langley better turn up to shed some light on this time traveling business and hopefully Dan and Livia could have one more moment together before going their separate ways forever. Despite the feelings they will always have for one another, both have their own lives in their own times and being forced to work together on every mission is just unfair. Perhaps that was Livia's punishment for getting involved with Dan in the first place? I'm in agreement with many of the posts that Dan and Jack's father must be a traveler. His explanation for leaving them was that he felt like a freak and nothing else would explain how Dr. Langley knew him (unless it was because of the photo he took of Dan in this episode.) So in response to the cancellation of the show, I'd like to hear how you all would like to see the show wrap up. Personally, I'd like to see Langley be the one controlling the trips and Dan somehow manage to get out of having to travel so that he can resume his normal life with his family obviously including a sweet and sappy goodbye scene between Dan Livia. Lastly, though there was some delay in getting this week's blog up, I can assure all of you that the final 2 episodes will be recapped and will be up on our site the morning after each one airs for you all to leave your comments.
