Jon & Kate Plus 8 Episode Recap: "Renovations and Vacations," "Camping Out" Season 5, Episode 8

In the first new episodes since the Gosselins announced their plans to separate, things were back to normal on Jon & Kate Plus 8. Well, as normal as they ever will be again.

Though there were several references to the paparazzi and "what's transpired," these episodes carried a different tone than this season's first six and (thankfully) focused mostly on the kids, who have always been the most fun to watch.

The first episode saw Jon and Kate planning to remodel their kitchen, something that had been planned since January. With mom refusing to wash dishes in the bathtub and dad fearing for his kids' safety in a construction zone, Kate took the brood to the beach while Jon stayed back to supervise the workers. At the beach, the kids tumbled in the surf, looked for "dolphins and bugs," ate sand, and, as Kate said, took a breather from the stress, even though it followed them there. "Within two-and-a-half days, we had three to five paparazzi snapping pictures... I'm not going to keep my kids inside and stifle their existence," Kate said.

The following episode featured more Kate-and-kids fun, and absolutely zero of Jon, which could become more prevalent in the upcoming tag team-style episodes. Kate showed off her "new attitude" of can-do parenting by putting up a tent for a backyard camping adventure. (She was sure to note that the production assistants assembled the larger of the two tents, but also dropped in lines about fixing a screen window for the first time in her life.)

Though the kids said Kate did a "terrible job" with the tent and struggled to make the fire ("The whole world is going to have smoke in it," one bugger quipped), the children still ended their night with a s'more-induced sugar buzz that carried over into the kids' zany recollections in the interview chair. Still Jon's absence was felt. "She's a girl and didn't know what to do... only boys know what to do," one of the younger girls said. "Daddy knows everything about a tent."

Were you happy to see that, even in the post-split era of the show, these episodes felt more like the old days? Will you continue to watch? Vote in our poll below.

Premise: A breakout hit chronicling life with a Pennsylvania family with two sets of multiples (twins and sextuplets). The first four seasons offer a mostly endearing look at life in a large family, but the series took a more serious turn in Season 5 when Jon and Kate announced they were separating. The subsequent discord led to the end of the series at the conclusion of that season, in 2009.
