Joanna flies over the Sudd, the world's largest swamp. In South Sudan, she meets a beauty queen, a symbol of hope to Sudanese women. She visits the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Uganda, then begins the last leg of her journey: hiking with adventurer Cam McLeay to the source of the Nile, a mere trickle of water in the mountains of Rwanda.
Joanna arrives in Khartoum, a city at the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile. She meets a whirling dervish and learns a sexy Sudanese secret. From there, she's off to Ethiopia's Lake Tana, an ancient monastery with ties to England, and the Simien Mountains, where she dines with a group of young Olympic hopefuls.
Crossing Lake Nasser by ferry, Joanna arrives at the port of Wadi Halfa, gateway to Sudan, and bids farewell to creature comforts. She searches for crocodiles in the Nubian Desert, climbs Jebel Barkal, explores the tomb of Queen Qalhata, visits nomads in the Bayuda Desert, and contemplates a simpler way of life.
Joanna travels by train from Alexandria to Cairo, where she rides a camel named Charlie Brown to the Pyramids of Giza. Heading south to Luxor, she boards a cruise ship and visits a date farm. Then she journeys to Aswan on a felucca barge whose captain believes the Nile is haunted by demons.
