I'm wondering what you think ...

Question: I'm wondering what you think of Saving Grace. I'm from Oklahoma, so I'm trying to figure out if my disappointment with the show comes from how it stereotypically portrays Oklahomans. There are the cowboy and Indian detectives. The angel chews tobacco. Part of the first episode took place at the stockyards, with the redneck millionaire cattleman hitting on Grace. The only character who doesn't seem like a walking stereotype is Grace herself, and she just seems off. A detective in Oklahoma driving a Porsche, even a beat-up one? On what planet? How much do they think detectives earn? And she's Catholic? Not that there aren't Catholics in Oklahoma, but there aren't that many, not like there are Baptists and Methodists. Why stereotype every character but one? Do you think future episodes are going to get any better? For me, the only thing this show accomplishes is to remind me how much I miss Joan of Arcadia. I'm still mad at CBS for that one.

Thoughts on Theme Song replacements

It's almost a given that a show with tons of music will have at least one song replaced when it comes out on DVD, but what if that one song is the theme for the show? The earliest theme-song replacements occurred on Dawson's Creek and Married... with Children, the former using the international theme, and the latter using a sound-alike song, but the replacements didn't stop there. Since then we've heard new theme songs for Life Goes On, the international theme for Las Vegas, a butchered theme for Baywatch, George Lopez uttering some words instead of "Low Rider" and the season 3 theme being used on season 2 of Happy Days. Why is this happening? Most songs are licensed on a per-play basis, so the theme song costs are multiplied by the number of episodes in the season. A $20,000 song quickly becomes $440,000 for the season, and the studios are telling us that the recording companies hold this songs hostage, knowing that it's the most important song to license. Sony delayed the third sea... read more

CBS in Bed with Swingers and Other Hell-raisers

CBS has ordered a pair of pilots, Variety reports: Swingtown, a 1970s-set drama about suburban couples who experiment with open marriages and wife-swapping, and Demons, a drama from Joan of Arcadia's Barbara Hall and Joe Roth that concerns a Jesuit priest turned psychologist who performs exorcisms. And then, what, blames the possession on the host's unresolved mother issues? read more

Kathryn Joosten, Desperate Housewives: Mrs. McCluskey Dishes the Dirt!

You loved her as Mrs. Landingham (so much so that you mourned her First Secretary's sudden death), and adored her as Old Lady God on Joan of Arcadia. These days, Kathryn Joosten is hanging with the Desperate Housewives (Sundays at 9 pm on ABC), even grabbing some gold for her portrayal of the sometimes-cranky, other times gossipy Karen McCluskey. TVGuide.com chatted with the Emmy-caliber character actress about what's ahead for Wisteria Lane, and how much she misses the Oval Office. TVGuide.com: I was thinking recently how cool it was to seeMrs. McCluskey hanging out on the porch, shooting the breeze with the other Housewives....Kathryn Joosten: Yes, wasn't that fun?! Dishing the dirt a little bit.... [Laughs] TVGuide.com: D read more

Premise: A spirited teen gets visits from God, who takes on various human forms to give her `assignments.' Not at all preachy or pretentious, this is a warm family drama with a classy ensemble cast portraying smartly defined characters, including Joan's police-detective dad and her older brother, a paraplegic. It was one of the few successful scripted shows to premiere in the 2003-04 season.
