It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Episode Recap: "Who Pooped the Bed?" Season 4, Episode 7

If there's any show that can bring together poop and Sex and the City, it's this one. Come to think of it, I suppose drawing the parallel isn't really all that hard. The gang at It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been responsible for taking it's audiences on a number of whacked out trips around the city of brotherly love. This week's installment may have taken the gang's self obsessed and depraved traits to a new level.

Just as she did when the show was on the air, Sweet Dee is trying to live the Sex and the City life now that there is a movie. Her hopes of going out with the gals to a martini bar just never seem to come together. Maybe that's because she hangs out with 4 men in a pub. 4 men who are currently discussing a poop problem Charlie and Frank are having.

The two share not only an apartment but a bed and for the second time they have found a piece of poop between them upon waking. Neither bunk mate is willing to confess. Charlie's PJ's with back flap and Frank's giant dress shirt that he sleeps in are used against the other as proof against the other. While none of the guys seem concerned with Dee's problem, Dennis at least seems intrigued by a mystery: Who Pooped the Bed?

Hunting down ladies for her group of friends, Dee jumps out on the Coffee Shop Waitress. Dee used Charlie's notebook about the waitress' whereabouts to track her down and uses it as leverage. If the waitress comes out with Dee then she gets the notebook.

The guys have taken the second piece of poop the two suspects found to a lab. When rejected by the first lab tech, a second man altogether offers to analyze the sample. Under a microscope the man finds it to be consisting of newspaper, blood, a credit card piece and wolf hair. Though maybe he shouldn't be trusted. Turns out he's an econ major who wanted to look at some poop.

Dee's also convinced her friend from acting class, and former Wawa employee, Artemis to be a part of her new circle triangle of friends. At the martini bar Dee ridicules The Waitress for not wanting a martini, blaming her drinking problem, and Artemis for only wanting drinks with the word "bomb" in the title. Artemis fun fact: A certain part of her anatomy has been bleached.

Across town the guys continue their investigation. They decide to recreate the positioning, same clothes and all, in order to deduce what happened. Man, I could so easily make a "deduce" joke concerning this episode. Dennis and Mac stay up through the night in hopes of cracking the case. When Mac feels tired he lies down while Dennis stands guard. The next morning Mac awakens to the smell of poop in the bed he's sleeping in.
Dee's plan of being a trend setting city girl just doesn't seem to be working out for anyone. The Waitress has broken her sobriety and Dee slams her head into a car door trying to steal a $700 pair of size 13 shoes.

Dee, The Waitress, and Artemis all return to Paddy's to find Charlie giving the first sample for the guys' newest plan, cross-referencing the newest sample against a sample from their suspects. The Waitress helps herself to another drink before calling Dee a "huge footed slut" and storming off. Artemis would rather help with the poop investigation than go with Dee to an art gallery.

Maybe it's her true gift for seeing the meaning in art, or the bang on the head from earlier, Dee begins to see poop in all of the pieces at the gallery. When she returns to Paddy's the lights go out and she sees another piece of poop at her feet. This one isn't in her head, however.

In a scene that was part Clue and part JFK, all set to a Danny Elfman score, Artemis proceeded to lay out theories as to how each member of the gang could be responsible for the poop. Finally she blames The Waitress and Frank matter-of-factly admits to being responsible for every last specimen.

A rather uneventful conclusion to the blog, right? That's how I felt about this episode. Maybe it's the bar I unfairly place too high for this show but a lot of the humor and story points in the last third specifically seemed beneath the writing staff and actors. As always there was some good to be found. But I might be placing this at the bottom of the barrel for It's Always Sunny so far. But let's face it; the worst episode of this show is still funnier than 90% of other show's best episodes.

Premise: Seriously dark comedy about four dissolute friends who run a struggling pub in Philadelphia. Dennis, Dee, Mac and Charlie are absolutely (even gleefully) amoral. They're 'Seinfeld' characters on steroids, clowning their way through story lines that 'Seinfeld' writers wouldn't have touched.
