TV Guide Magazine's 60th Anniversary: How Desi Arnaz Jr. Became Our First Cover Star

He helped make TV Guide Magazine a hit right out of the box. And we, in turn, helped make his life utterly confusing! On April 3, 1953, a chubby-cheeked newborn named Desiderio Alberto Arnaz IV — eventually known as Desi Arnaz Jr. — graced the cover of our very first issue with a cover line touting him as "Lucy's $50,000,000 Baby." Lucy, of course, was Lucille Ball, the madcap, flame-tressed star of America's most adored sitcom at the time, I Love Lucy, while Dad was Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz — and both of them knew the value of publicity... read more

The New Normal and a Return to Old-School Comedy

The New Normal is American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy's first attempt at a sitcom — but not just any sitcom, a "gay sitcom" (at least according to all the various media outlets that label the series as "gay TV," "NBC's gay comedy," etc.). But while David (Justin Bartha) and Bryan's (Andrew Rannells) sexuality might establish The New Normal as progressive, the series is heavily grounded in TV storytelling tradition. Once you look past the same-sex aspect, it's easy to see how The New Normal  has more in common with classic sitcoms like... read more

Premise: TV's first great sitcom centered on a zany New York housewife who wants desperately to get into showbiz and her Cuban bandleader husband who has his hands full trying to dissuade her. Also getting caught up in their shenanigans were the Mertzes, their landlords and best friends. A pioneer for being filmed before a studio audience with multiple cameras, the top-rated series racked up 180 episodes before ending in 1957. Several specials aired from '57 to '60 as 'The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.'
