House Episode Recap: "Open and Shut" Season 6, Episode 18

A woman is brought to the hospital with a mysterious illness, but House and team are equally as fascinated by her open marriage. Taub brings up the idea to his wife, and things get complicated. Meanwhile, Wilson stands up to Sam about the little things.

The Patient

A woman named Julia is on a date with an attractive man when a she receives a knock on the door from her husband Tom. First thought? Busted! But not quite — he's there to get her to sign papers for their daughter's school and we assume the two are just divorced considering he introduces himself to Julia's suitor. But when Tom and Julia kiss goodbye, it's safe to assume these two kids have an open marriage. As soon as he leaves, she suffers excruciating pain and is admitted to the hospital.

At first everyone thinks its intestinal blockage, but Julia progressively gets worst and they question if she acquired something from the multiple partners she or her husband have been with. During questioning, Chase learns Tom has been faithful for the past year, and he's only allowing Julia to continue because he says it's what she needs. House isn't buying it and is convinced he's done something to even the score that didn't involve sex with someone else. Low and behold, the good doc is right when we learn Tom has no insurance and had to take money of his retirement to cover Julia's medical bills. Why retirement? Because he's lost their savings.

The doctors rule out a clotting disorder, but Julia's excruciating pain returns and they think her intestine overlapped on itself. They still can't get to the cause of things, and Thirteen tells Julia she should see her husband because her prognosis isn't good. At the last minute, House has his light bulb moment when he sees Tom brought his wife lilacs from their garden — a flower that attracts an abundance of bees. House discovers a rash in Julia's mouth caused by Henoch-Schoenlein purpura from a bee sting. They treat her accordingly and the case is closed.

Once a Cheater...

Taub is thoroughly intrigued by the concept of an open marriage, and though he pretends to be against the idea, his interest is clearly piqued based on his game of 20 questions with Julia. Later that evening, Taub brings up his patient's marriage arrangement over dinner with his wife Rachel, and she's sharp enough to pick up on the fact that he's not just making conversation. She automatically assumes Taub is having another affair, but he assures her he is not. He does come clean about a nurse he's been flirting with, and Rachel asks point-blank if he wants an open marriage. Taub pretends that's not what he wants, and he is saved by the bell when he's paged back to the hospital.

The next day at the hospital, House is quick to realize Taub spent the night at work and Taub comes clean about the fact that he brought up open marriage with his wife. The team is shocked, but not as shocked as Taub is when his wife green-lights the open marriage later that night. Taub doesn't waste any time and sets up a date with the nurse the next day. Again, House figures it out, and again, the team can't believe he's actually going to go through with it.

Just as Taub is about to head out on his date that evening, his wife shows up at the hospital and says she can't go with through with it. Taub tells her she is the only one he wants to be with and leaves to spend the night with her. Of course, Taub was full of it, because the next night, he bumps into his nurse in the parking garage and the two share a kiss. She asks if he "wants to go somewhere," and though I actually thought he was going to do the right thing, he leaves with the woman. Dirtbag.

Wilson Stands Up for Himself

Things seem to be going just peachy for Wilson and his ex-wife-turned-new girlfriend Sam. But as time goes on, the little things begin to bother Wilson — how she doesn't use coasters, how she puts milk on the fridge door, how she loads the dishwasher — and he speaks up about it. They realize House is responsible for instigating a few of the fights, but the bickering continues and their divorce comes up.

Sam shows up at the hospital to make peace, and the two realize they both have changed: she has better communication skills, and Wilson doesn't allow his real feelings to sit inside until resentment builds. They both agree not to thank House for sticking his nose in their business and opening their eyes, but he's well aware of the role he played.

What did you think of the episode? Were you surprised Taub went off with the nurse, or were you expecting it?
