Since her breakout role on Murphy Brown, Faith Ford has become a go-to for straight-woman roles, in no small part because of her turn opposite Kelly Ripa on ABC's Hope & Faith. To mark the first season's DVD release Tuesday, TVGuide.com caught up with the 44-year-old Alexandria, La., native. She looked back on the premiere's massive food fight between her and Ripa, plus the show's madcap costume changes and a slew of special guests, including Regis Philbin as Handsome Hal. She also talked about why her first-season teenage daughter was replaced by a then-newcomer named Megan Fox.

Question: Matt, I'm a huge fan! My question is about ABC's comedies (According to Jim, Rodney, Hope & Faith, Crumbs, Sons & Daughters, George Lopez, Freddie and Less than Perfect). Which ones do you think will survive another season? I think it's time for According to Jim and Hope & Faith to go. But I love Rodney and Less than Perfect. Creatively, I feel they have a lot to offer. Do you think there is at all a chance for a TGIF comeback? What are your thoughts on this?
Answer: Of all the shows you mentioned, I would only even consider watching Sons & Daughters regularly. But I know I'm in the minority on that one, given the puny ratings it drew this spring, which makes me doubt it will return, barring a miracle. (There are some intriguing comedy concepts kicking around ABC for next season, and maybe ABC would keep Sons & Daughters alive as a companion piece. But that's probably a pipe dream.) So thanks, CBS, for doing the right thing by The Amazing Race, and more important, for the show's family audience, by moving the show back to an earlier time period. As has been much discussed since the show was moved to 10 pm/ET this spring, with a season far superior than last fall's "family" edition, the new time period was simply on too late for many of its fans to watch it live. Starting next Wednesday, April 5, Race will now air Wednesdays at 8 pm/ET for (presumably) the rest of the season. ABC: The network's comedies are having a tough year in the ratings, but you can't cancel all of them. Rodney, Hope & Faith, Crumbs and Less than Perfect aren't likely to make the cut. Question: I've been watching a lot of reruns of Roseanne on Nick at Nite lately and I wonder if there can ever be another show to match it. It was brilliant, especially in its early years. I would love to watch another family comedy on the same level as Roseanne.
Answer: So would we all. Those first seasons of Roseanne were so raw, so honest, so true to the star's vision, and, of course, so hilarious. One of the saddest observations I can make about today's TV comedy scene is to look at ABC and to realize that the network that once showcased Roseanne, Brett Butler and Tim Allen is now the network of Jim Belushi, Freddie Prinze Jr., George Lopez and Hope & Faith. Alias will return to wrap up its final season on April 19, in a new Wednesdays-at-8 time slot. On the heels of reports that ABC has halted production on the Emily's Reasons Why Not, which will be kept off the air for at least another two weeks (as will Jake in Progress), comes word that Hope & Faith will remain on hiatus through February sweeps to make room on Friday for the refrigerator-sized Master P a permanently expanded Dancing with the Stars results show.

ABC apparently found a reason why not, deciding to bump Heather Graham's just-debuted Emily's Reasons Why Not, as well as John Stamos' own ratings-anemic series, Jake in Progress, from the schedule this Monday in favor of an encore of The Bachelor's season premiere. Both comedies are expected to return Jan. 23. Also, it's an unlucky Friday the 13th for Hope & Faith, which has been benched to expand the Dancing with the Stars results show to a full, overblown hour. Speaking of which, if Master P isn't gone by 8:59 pm, I smell shark.

As part of its mid-season shake-up, ABC has announced that Season 2 of Dancing with the Stars will premiere Thursday, Jan. 5 at 8 pm/ET with a two-hour special, then air 90-minute installments starting the following week. (Take that, Earl!) Dancing's half-hour results show airs Fridays at 8, starting Jan. 6. Also on the new schedule: Hope & Faith moves to Fridays at 8:30, to make room for the new drama In Justice, debuting Jan. 6, and the dysfunctional-family comedy Crumbs, starring Fred Savage, Jane Curtin and William Devane, bows Thursday, Jan. 12 at 9:30.
