High School Musical 2 Review

What time is it? It's summertime… and time for the highly anticipated sequel to Disney's mega-hit a href="High School Musical. In HSM 2, the gang from East High kicks off summer vacation by heading to a ritzy country club in the picturesque hills of New Mexico. Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) and Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) are all set to relax by the pool on Mommy and Daddy's dime while Troy (Zac Efron), Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) and the rest of the crew are forced to take jobs to save up for college, cars and the other expenses teenagers face. Although the employment of her fellow students puts a damper on Sharpay's summer plans, she wastes no time concocting a scheme to keep her summer fabulous. With the help of her clique, the Sharpettes, she uses her powers of persuasion to steal Troy away from his friends and ensure victory at the end-of-summer talent show. High School Musical 2 has everything (and everyone) we all loved from the first movie, and more. Characters like Zeke the baker... read more

Cable's Summer Hits a New High

Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale in High School Musical 2 by Adam Larkey/Disney Channel

The ridiculous (in a good way) ratings for Disney Channel's multiple record-breaking weekend launch of High School Musical 2 was just the most spectacular reminder of what a great TV summer this has been — if you have cable. Not even a big hit like TNT's The Closer can match HSM2's numbers, and some of the best series, like AMC's mesmerizing Mad Men, are only doing so-so. But that's only to be expected given the glut of programming on many nights — including Thursdays, when Mad Men goes head-to-head with USA Network's latest clever breakout caper, Burn Notice. I thought my DVRs would get a break this summer. Didn't happen.Just look at the options we’ve had over the last few nights, including terrific new episodes of Burn Notice and Mad Men on Thursday. I’m really enjoying Burn now that ex-spy Michael Weston is getting closer to the truth about how he was set up to be fired. And what can I say about Mad Men besides the word I used to start my initial review of th... read more

As a parent of a tween, I ...

Zac Effron and Vanessa Hudgens, High School Musical 2

Question: As a parent of a tween, I want to thank you for the nice words about High School Musical 2. My daughter has postponed her birthday party almost four weeks so she can have a High School Musical 2 premiere party. It is a huge deal in our house. It is so neat for someone of your stature — I really respect your reviews and commentaries — to give this show a positive review. I have a hard time understanding why the networks shy away from such programming. Why didn't Disney broadcast High School Musical 2 on ABC? I know that programming is all about demographics, but consider how much money High School Musical has made for the Disney parent company. Tweens like to spend money — my daughter is a great example of that! Disney Channel is basically commercial-free, except for the network's own programming, and while I like that, I just wonder why the lure of advertising dollars from outside Disney did not prompt a network broadcast. Our family and others we know love to watch shows ... read more

It's Showtime for Sex, Drugs and Twisted Family Values

Don't look for Showtime to win a good-parenting medal anytime soon.In the compellingly caustic new comedy Californication, the debauched anti-hero (David Duchovny) brings his 12-year-old daughter home, and she solemnly wonders: "Why is there a naked lady in your bedroom?" (Make up your own "That's no lady" retort.) Meanwhile, in the third rollicking season of its companion show Weeds, TV's most desperate drug-dealing housewife (Mary-Louise Parker) is seen supervising her son packing bags of pot as she reluctantly sinks deeper into criminal intrigue. Subversive? Of course. Pay cable is all about pushing the envelope. The racier and more twisted the satire, the better the buzz, and in that regard, these shows deliver. But beneath their sardonic surface, they share an undercurrent of regret that their characters' lives have come to this. In Californication, Duchovny is as rakishly appealing as any cad can be, playing an embittered writer who stews in self-c read more

High School Musical 3 (Yes, 3) Has Disney "Optimistic"

Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale in High School Musical 2 by Adam Larkey/Disney Channel

Disney Channel on Saturday unveiled its plans to premiere High School Musical 2 with the fanfare of, say, an Eva Longoria wedding or a Paris Hilton jail stay. The follow-up film, which your rugrats and/or onetime coworker Angel Cohn have long been pestering you about, first airs Aug. 17 at 8 pm/ET, with a telecast hosted from a backyard BBQ by its stars and director Kenny Ortega. On Aug. 18, an encore airing will be accentuated by an interactive online chat with cast members. Then, on Aug. 19 — because let's face it, your kid is watching it three nights in a row anyway — the repeat will be fashioned as a sing-along, with lyrics flashed on your screen. But wait, there's more. Literally. Disney Channel Worldwide's prez is already teasing a HSM No. 3, saying, "We're working on a script and talking to talent.... We're happily optimistic we'll pull everybody back together." read more
