While everyone else was huddled under their umbrellas for a fancy fireworks display, I was finally getting answers about a death that's been driving me crazy for weeks. That's right. No hot dogs and hamburgers for me. Just one crazy Maria Nolan and the truth about her son.
It's really too bad that Greta was relieved about Eddie not killing himself because of her mistake and feeling comfortable enough to call Skip "Dad," when really he's at fault for this entire mess. But
she doesn't know that. Johnny, it's time to buy a new computer, buddy. Yours is clearly haunted with warnings and frightening videos. At least we were able to watch exactly what happened along with Johnny, even if that leaves everyone else in the dark.
Still, knowing Skip was the one who pulled the trigger doesn't make me sympathize with Maria. I know she lost her son, but she also had an affair with Skip while Greta's mom was sick and dying. Plus, her trysts with Cliff put me over the edge, so seeing Liza trip over her dead body wasn't all that upsetting. The only thing Maria said that I agreed with was that "time stops when people die." Her little run-in with Johnny was pretty eerie, and the emptiness in her eyes was enough to show how helpless and lifeless she's become since Eddie's death.
The CW wrapped this show up in a neat little bow. The mystery was solved and all the major love stories were given second chances. The only thing that made Nikki giving Cliff another shot believable was her backstory and how she asked for another chance after countless disasters. (Did anyone else think it was weird how Cliff was just sitting on the edge of his bed staring blankly before Nikki showed up?) But like Jesse Jo said, "Sometimes the people who deserve second chances the least are the ones that'll surprise you the most." I knew Nikki couldn't stay away from him for long.
Karen and Bob's makeup was predictable as well, but there was really no reason for them to part, and you could see the relief in Johnny's eyes when he saw his mom move on from the past. I thought it was interesting how Cliff asked him if knowing the truth helped him cope with his father's death. Obviously not. It was a long, winding road to the truth, which really just circled back to feeling a loss that can't be replaced with facts. Just time. And he can spend that time with a girl who's holding the same weight. It was cute how Greta pulled him back to kiss him before he left. I think the only thing I'm still curious about is Liza's relationship with Eddie. Were they sleeping together for awhile? Was it just because he found out about Greta and Cliff? Did he really love her instead of Greta?
I guess there's a chance we'll find out more, but if not, this show definitely filled a spot in my summer schedule with lots of sarcasm, secrets and the whirlwind love of adolescence. Plus, ridiculous parents, a drag show and one shady Cliff. I'd say that's enough of a fireworks show, wouldn't you?
