June 6, 2007: "Enjoy the View" Season 1, Episode 2

I feel tangled in a web I can't quite figure out. The circles of flirting and warnings are making me dizzy, and most frustrating is the enigma of Eddie. What on earth was that whole computer appearance at the end? "Welcome to my world." More like, "Welcome to my room" - the familiar backdrop was pretty creepy. It was already clear he didn't kill himself before Johnny received those shady instant messages, but now I'm even more confused. Cliff's fluff talk wasn't fooling anyone and with Bob confirming that the Realtor only mentioned a death not a suicide, and Greta uttering "what we did," I can only begin to imagine what actually happened between the three of them. But there's lots more to go around than that mystery. Nikki's (Tessa Thompson) arrival was key, if only to provide a little competition to win Johnny's attention - not everything revolves around Greta. Nikki was there for maybe a minute before the two girls were staring each other down. But her appearance also opened us up to Johnny's rehab days, reminding us how far he's come since then - unlike Nikki. I was kind of surprised Johnny let her make a fool of herself for that long before helping her leave the party. And on that AA note, it was predictable that Jesse Jo would become his sponsor after that whole "I'm too young to be an alcoholic.... Not everybody's doing the vodka shuffle" chat. The Shack seemed a typical O.C.-esque hangout (as did the lazy days by the pool minus Cliff rubbing lotion on girls' backs, which prompted an eye roll from me). I think I saw some skirts shorter than the wardrobe showcased at a Victoria's Secret runway show. And what's up with these kids always living on their own? Greta sounds like she's got enough freedom to last her a lifetime, which is sad for someone who clearly needs love and guidance, although I guess we don't really know her yet. I'm unsure about whose warnings I should believe when it comes to her and Cliff, whose mom is pulling a Demi Moore with her boy toy, Travis. (No offense, Demi, you actually have a keeper there. We know Ashton's the real deal.) Meanwhile, Johnny eased up on his mom by the end with a thank-you that clearly meant everything to her. But just because he was on a little high from that kiss with Greta doesn't mean that will last more than 30 seconds before something else comes crashing down. That's just how these shows work, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I think we'll be seeing more of the parents and their lives intermixing as well. Bob seems innocent enough, but I wonder if he's hiding any secrets himself. After the second week, I have to hand it to Taylor Handley for keeping things afloat. He's pretty convincing, compared to some of the rest of his cast mates, and his expressions seem true to the scenes. It doesn't seem forced, despite the unrealistic world of Palm Springs - cyber-mysteries and all. Are you still watching? Watch more on Hidden Palms in our Online Video Guide. show less
