USS Samuel B. Roberts is remembered. The first ship to bear the name sank in 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. A second ship took the name in 1946 and a third was commissioned in 1986 and sent to the Persian Gulf in 1988.
Honoring the USS Laffey, which was the name of two destroyers. The first was sunk during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942; and the second also served in World War II, earning the nickname "The Ship That Would Not Die" because of the heavy bombardment it endured.
