As EMT Tony Gee (guest star Cress Williams) refuses treatment for an injury so that he won't have to live with ALS, Christina (Jade Pinkett Smith) returns to the hospital in the wake of her divorce even as she worries about Nick's (Marc Anthony) sudden disappearance.
As Christina (Jada Pinkett Smith) looks to move beyond her divorce, her plans to leave town are upended by the death of Nick's (Marc Anthony) mother. And as Bobbie (Suleka Mathew) learns that the money she lost to a con man may be returned, Steve (Adam Rayner) struggles with his estranged father's grave illness.
As the problems brought on by her affair with Nick send Christina (Jada Pinkett Smith) to see a therapist, Tom (Michael Vartan) makes it clear that he won't stay on at James River if his wife is hired to run the hospital. Meanwhile, Steve (Adam Rayner) struggles to help an EMT who's been diagnosed with ALS.
With Morrissey in rehab, the no-nonsense board member brought in to serve as interim director has some surprises in store for Christina (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Bobbie (Suleka Mathew). And as Bobbie tries to enhance her reputation by enlisting a smooth-talking investment manager to help with fundraising, Christina's strong feelings for Nick (Marc Anthony) threaten to upend her marriage.
