After refusing to eat squash, Harold is sent to his room. Wanting to go somewhere where no one can tell him what to do, Harold becomes a lonesome cowboy who gets entangled in a wild adventure.
Frustrated that he can't draw a perfect circle, Harold visits a museum. After experiencing all the different forms of art, Harold learns to appreciate his lopsided circles.
Harold is fascinated by animals and wonders what it would be like to be an elephant, giraffe, camel, cheetah, penguin and monkey.
After celebrating his birthday and playing with all his new toys, Harold wishes for another birthday party and along the way learns about the value of friendship.
