Coketown is a grim factory town where all that matters are hard work and hard facts. This lavish 1977 adaptation of Charles Dickens's novel stars Timothy West as the pompous Josiah Bounderby and Patrick Allen as the cold Thomas Gradgrind, two men trapped in a loveless world. Materialism contrasts with the magic of life, utilitarian philosophy with the joy of the human spirit.
Season 1, Episode 3
Bounderby and Gradgrind's fact-bound worlds come crashing down. After an unknown person robs Bounderby's bank, the investigation focuses on the "fugitive" Stephen Blackpool. However, Louisa suspects a perpetrator closer to home and closer to her heart. Then, Harthouse makes more than friendly advances toward Louisa, creating a profound crisis for her and a painful confrontation with her father.
Season 1, Episode 2
Encouraged by her father, Louisa Gradgrind reluctantly accepts Bounderby's marriage proposal. Enter Capt. James Harthouse, a glib Parliamentarian offering Louisa relief from her loveless household. Meanwhile, Bounderby unfairly fires the honest Stephen Blackpool, who resolves to build a new life elsewhere. Before Stephen leaves, Louisa pays him a visit, and her brother Tom throws him a lifeline.
Season 1, Episode 4
Tom is incriminated, but dies a fugitive.
