Miley Cyrus Contest Duped by "Dead Dad" Essay, But Withdraws Grand Prize

An essay that started off, "My daddy died this year in Iraq... " and in turn won a 6-year-old fan a Hannah Montana makeover and four tickets to a sold-out Miley Cyrus concert has since been exposed as utterly false. That's right — there's no dead dad. (Watch a video of the mother being confronted here.) "We did whatever we could do to win," the girl's mother admitted to Dallas-Fort Worth's KDFW Channel 4. "But when [the contest sponsor] asked me if this essay is true, I said, 'No, this essay is not true.'"As a result and after much deliberation, Club Libby Lu — the mall chain that ran the essay contest and has already delivered on the makeover — has decided not to fly the Garland, Texas, girl to Albany, New York, to attend a Jan. 9 concert. "Club Libby Lu greatly values honesty and integrity," the retailer says in a statement. "In order to uphold these values, we have decided to withdraw the award initially given to the Ceballos family. Consequently, we will award the... read more

Miley Cyrus Fan Club Hit by Class-action Lawsuit

Two law firms based out of Pittsburgh and Memphis on Tuesday filed a class-action lawsuit against Interactive Media Marketing and Smiley Miley Inc., the handlers of the Miley Cyrus Fan Club, claiming they failed to fulfill a promise to give members first crack at concert tickets that have since become impossible to come by. "They deceptively lured thousands of individuals into purchasing [$29.95 annual] memberships... based on the understanding that... they would be able to purchase Hannah Montana concert tickets before they were offered for sale to the general public," says a lawyer for the New Jersey woman who led the charge. The suit alleges the fan club should have known that its membership exceeded the number of available tickets.According to the AP, neither defendant has yet to respond to the legal action. read more

Miley Cyrus by Steve Granitz/WireImage.com

Some salvation for the moms and dads who couldn't swing that second mortgage to score tickets: The sold-out "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" is being filmed for the purpose of a 3-D theatrical release to hit theaters for one week and one week only, starting Feb. 1, 2008. Miley Cyrus: I'm Not Worth a $2,000 Scalped Ticket!

Miley Cyrus by Bob D'Amico/Disney Channel

Appearing on Thursday's Ellen DeGeneres Show, Billy Ray Cyrus deems it "sad" that scalpers gobbled up so many tickets to his daughter's concert tour, thus depleting the supply and escalating the asking price. But Miley Cyrus isn't one to sit by and let thieves jilt her fans. Rather, the Hannah Montana star is doing whatever she can to get more room added at each venue, thus making more seats available. "It's going to be a good show, but I don't think it's worth what it's going for," Miley tells Ellen. "[But] for the people that do get to come, I'm going to make it the best show ever." And ideally have concertgoers home by bedtime. read more

Holy Miley! Cyrus-Montana Tour Is Biz's Hottest Ticket

Miley Cyrus by Jamie McCarthy/WireImage.com

Tickets for Miley Cyrus' concert tour, kicking off later this month, are selling out in minutes at many venues, leaving wannabe parents-of-the-year frustrated and/or faced with exorbitant markups. "We knew it was hot, but we had no idea it was this crazy," the tour's organizer tells the AP. "It's like the Beatles." (That's Stella McCartney's dad's old band, kiddies.) Some stats: Cyrus' Memphis show filled 12,000 seats in eight minutes; a ticket for the Charlotte, North Carolina, show went for $2,565; though the tour caps ticket prices at $65, the average resale is $214, besting Timberlake, Beyoncé and The Police. While scalpers use computer programs to scarf up lotsa tickets superfast and to pass them on at massive margins, a spokesperson for StubHub advises moms and dads: "The prices you see now are not the prices that are going to hold. Parents need to set a price that they are comfortable with and watch the market." And brace for a tantrum. read more

Hannah "Mom"-tana? Cyrus Victim of Pregnancy Prank

Miley Cyrus by Bob D'Amico/Disney Channel

No, Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus is not pulling a Keisha Castle-Hughes. The rising teen queen was targeted by a (very poorly) doctored-up tabloid magazine article tweaked to suggest that the 14-year-old is pregnant, a Photoshopped falsehood that spread across the Internet and understandably raised eyebrows. "It's 100 percent false," Cyrus' rep tells People. "It's ridiculous and completely untrue. [Miley] just wrapped Season 2 of Hannah Montana and will go on tour beginning Oct. 18."As for the truth about what used to transpire between Tiger and Kitty Carry-all in the doghouse... let's not go there. read more

As a parent of a tween, I ...

Zac Effron and Vanessa Hudgens, High School Musical 2

Question: As a parent of a tween, I want to thank you for the nice words about High School Musical 2. My daughter has postponed her birthday party almost four weeks so she can have a High School Musical 2 premiere party. It is a huge deal in our house. It is so neat for someone of your stature — I really respect your reviews and commentaries — to give this show a positive review. I have a hard time understanding why the networks shy away from such programming. Why didn't Disney broadcast High School Musical 2 on ABC? I know that programming is all about demographics, but consider how much money High School Musical has made for the Disney parent company. Tweens like to spend money — my daughter is a great example of that! Disney Channel is basically commercial-free, except for the network's own programming, and while I like that, I just wonder why the lure of advertising dollars from outside Disney did not prompt a network broadcast. Our family and others we know love to watch shows ... read more
