Hanging In on CBS

1979, TV Show

An untested university president figures in this Norman Lear summer sitcom, which went through many incarnations before getting on the air (and leaving it within a month). Originally, Lear devised the show as a new format for `Maude,' bringing her to Washington, D.C., as a new member of Congress. But the role instead went to Bill Macy (who ironically played Maude's husband). Subsequent unaired versions titled `Onward and Upward,' `Mr. Dooley' and `Mr. Dugan' all evolved into `Hanging In.'
