Why I Fell Head Over Heels for Dancing with the Stars

It only took 18 seasons (and nearly a decade) for me to tune in to even a minute of ABC's Dancing With the Stars. I'll admit that nostalgia for some of my cherished '90s TV stars Candace Cameron Bure and Danica McKellar, combined with a small crush on boy-bander James Maslow, piqued my interest. But halfway through that first episode, I knew right away that I was hooked.

What started as unexpected enjoyment has quickly evolved into a mild obsession. I get mad when a team's score seems unjust or excited when a duo nails their performance. I get nervous when one of my favorites is deemed "unsafe." I can't get enough of the behind-the-scenes action, the fun banter and watching the relationships develop between the stars and their pros.

Blurred Lines: Alan Thicke's Unusually Thicke Is Not Your Average Reality Show

Robin Thicke might hate these blurred lines, but his father sure doesn't. (Not like that!)

Alan Thicke, the erstwhile patriarch Jason Seaver on Growing Pains, returns to TV on Wednesday on Unusually Thicke (10/9c, TVGN), his reality-sitcom hybrid that's real, but not really. The series follows Thicke, 67, and his self-professed modern family, 16-year-old son Carter from his second marriage, and his third wife Tanya, who is 28 years his junior. It's authentic in that every interaction and piece of dialogue on the show is unscripted, but not totally legit in that they semi-stage the situations the trio finds themselves in.

The most loathed TV characters

"It's real with a nudge and a wink," Thicke tells TVGuide.com. "It's part-reality, part-sitcom. I never was so presumptuous to think that we're interesting enough to be followed ...

Alan Thicke to Star in TVGN Reality Show Unusually Thicke

Alan Thicke, best known for playing Growing Pains patriarch Jason Seaver, will star in a TVGN reality sitcom showcasing his real-life family, the network announced Wednesday.

Though his son Robin Thicke will not be a cast member, the "Blurred Lines" singer will be featured on the series, which blends aspects of reality television and scripted sitcoms.

This week, it seemed like everyone jumped on the "Blurred Lines" parody bandwagon, creating alternate versions that featured everything from reversed gender roles to the cast of Growing Pains. Premise: Easy-to-take sitcom about a mild-mannered psychiatrist keeping an eye on his precocious kids from his home office while his wife is off at work as a reporter. Belying its innocent appearance, `Pains' did occasionally address teen social issues, but mostly it stuck to the Seaver kids' growing pains (and the youngest, Chrissy, literally shot up: growing from toddler to 6-year-old in two seasons). Leonardo DiCaprio (then 16) joined the cast in the final season as a homeless teenager.
