growing pains
Easy-to-take sitcom about a mild-mannered psychiatrist keeping an eye on his precocious kids from his home office while his wife is off at work as a reporter. Belying its innocent appearance, `Pains' did occasionally address teen social issues, but mostly it stuck to the Seaver kids' growing pains (and the youngest, Chrissy, literally shot up: growing from toddler to 6-year-old in two seasons). Leonardo DiCaprio (then 16) joined the cast in the final season as a homeless teenager.
  • Tracey Gold Has Fourth Baby to See Growing Up | Today's News: Our Take | 4/2/2008
Tracey Gold on Tuesday gave birth to a baby boy, her fourth with husband Roby Marshall. Along with her mom duties to the new infant, the former Growing Pains star also hosts the new show The Secret Life of a Soccer Mom(TLC), plus she's already a mother to Sage, 11, Bailey, 8, and Aiden Michael, 3. Dylan Christopher, the latest addition to her gaggle of little ones, was born at Tarzana Hospital weighing 8 lbs., 4 oz. While it sounds like Gold's got a lot to handle, at least now, in her new gig, she can dispense advice for the mere mortal moms among us. — Anna DimondUse our Online Video Guide to take a peek at Gold's new show, The Secret Life of a Soccer Mom. read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Little Ben Seaver Catches Brad Pitt Having an Affair! | Today's News: Our Take | 2/29/2008
Today’s Lunch-isode Series: Growing PainsEpisode Title: Feet of ClaySeason: 4Year: 1989Why we love this episode: We’re gonna have to say that we “heart” this episode to no end — mainly because there’s a twentysomething Brad Pitt guest-starring as the rock-star obsession in little Ben Seaver’s life. But after Pitt starts throwing nasty words around like ‘snotnose brat’ and ‘bozo’ in a fit of rage, the Seavers finally see the rocker for the true Hollywood d-bag that he really is! • September 28, 2006: Graduation Day | TV Show Recaps | 9/29/2006
As if Abby and Luka didn’t have enough to contend with, tonight manic-depressive Maggie breezed in to meet her ailing grandson and offer her support in a flurry of note taking and NICU staff badgering. However, she also brought an unexpected mix of motherly wisdom and perspective that Abby sorely needed. Sally Field has done an excellent job with this role in each of her appearances, taking a strident character and making her sympathetic and relatable, never sugarcoating the challenges of living with mental illness. Despite her doubts, Maggie actually persuaded Abby to include the baby in a trial that was both risky and promising. (The scene where she insisted something was wrong with the baby reminded me of the scene from Terms of Endearment when Shirley MacLaine loses it on the nurses for not administering her daughter’s pain medication on time.) While I thought it was downright mean to lead all of us to believe the baby had died, the last scene of Abby with her mom... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Now that Joey is DOA on its ... | Matt Roush | 4/17/2006
Question: Now that Joey is DOA on its return, again we have the debate about the death of what we know as the traditional sitcom. My question is, was Joey that bad? No, it wasn't as topical as Sex and the City or as well written as Frasier, but Joey never set out to be either of those shows. It was a sitcom with some basic, familiar characters and uncomplicated story lines. Twenty years ago shows like Growing Pains and Who's the Boss? were top-10 hits, and I think Joey compares in format to these shows. Do you think that Joey was a substandard version of the traditional sitcom, or have we so evolved due to clever writing that it has all but destroyed the basic sitcom? A show like Frasier or Seinfeld at its peak only comes along once in a decade, so if that has become our benchmark for comedy, of course anything else is going to pale in comparison. On a related note, can you envison a day when the comedy categories in the Emmys will become obsolete now that, by default, noncomedy shows... read more be the first to leave a comment
