Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watching Me" Season 6, Episode 2

In this episode of Grey's Anatomy, everyone in the hospital is worried for their jobs following the Chief's merger announcement. Izzie returns to work despite her cancer, and Cristina sucks up to Dr. Robbins as all the residents jockey for positions as the Chief compiles a layoff list. Meanwhile, Bailey and Karev treat a woman with a serious abdominal aneurysm, but they can't give the patient the help she needs because of her concern over her schizophrenic son. So, who makes the cut? Let's find out.

Having been kicked off Bailey's service and fearing that she didn't have an attending who would go to bat for her, Cristina cozies up to Arizona. Her logic is sound: She will get to do all the surgeries she wants, and since they are on kids, they are all the more complicated and therefore make her look better. Only problem is Cristina isn't exactly the cuddly kid type. She eats her patient's chocolate pudding, wants to cut open a young boy who passed his stones on his own and refuses to play hide-and-seek. (Her Mr. Bear voice, however, cracked me up.)

Even afar all those examples of how terrible she is with tykes, Arizona still wants to give Yang the benefit of the doubt until Callie shows up. Callie, who is looking for old case files to support her application for a job in Portland, tells Arizona that Cristina is only using her as cover from the merger. When a C-section goes wrong and a baby's arm is cut off, Arizona relegates Yang to recovering the umbilical artery while she and Sloan patch the baby up. (Sloan had the line of the night: "That's how I know I'm safe, Yang. I reattach babies' arms.) Once they have saved the baby, Arizona gives Yang a piece of her mind: "I don't like being used, and I like being lied to even less." Will Yang ever learn?

Izzie's paranoia leads her to buy a "Stepford wife" wig and come back to work three weeks early. Karev questions the wig choice, but Izzie says it's better than "peach fuzz chemo hair." But Karev's worries don't end there. He consistently interrupts meetings with patients to remind Izzie to take her meds, and even barges into a surgery when he learns that the procedure will run long. She sends him away, but he returns with her meds, a sip of water and a banana, realizing that she won't quit. It was a tender husband-wife moment, despite the fighting that led to it.

As Dr. Shepherd gets ready to close, he tells Izzie to go ahead and scrub out, but she refuses him as well. He notes that she is dripping with sweat and looks terrible, so she has the nurse take off her wig, cool down her head and gets right back to work. (Is it just me, or did her "real hair" look faker than the wig?) I applaud Izzie's bravery, but I fear her workload may still become an issue in future episodes.

Derek, after having witnessed what Izzie put herself through in the OR out of fear, calls out the Chief for sitting in his office and not talking to anyone. Derek was already upset that he wouldn't give him the heads up if he was cutting people from Derek's department, but is angry that he isn't out there putting people at ease. The Chief says he tried to save as many jobs as he could, but an e-mail will go out with the list of those to be cut.

The other most paranoid person in the hospital is Lexie, who rides a rollercoaster of emotions through the episode. A woman and her son are brought to the ER after a car accident, and Bailey notices a large growth in her abdomen. Just when the doctors think it's not bad enough, the mom drops a bombshell: Her son, Tom, has paranoid schizophrenia and believes aliens are out to get him. (He thinks smoke alarms are cameras installed to watch him.) Oh yeah, and he also believes the aliens impregnated his mom. Cut to the growth in her stomach pulsating. (And it's not even the Halloween episode!)

Lexie is put in charge of bandaging Tom's wrist, but when he notices Lexie's not wearing a nametag, he believes she is "one of them." He attacks her, and bolts out of the ER. Security finally tracks him down, but in his fear, he falls down the stairs, injuring his spleen. While sedated, Lexie shows Tom his ultrasound to calm his fears that they put a camera in his stomach. Meanwhile, Bailey realizes Tom's mother has an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which could burst and kill her at any moment. Bailey breaks the news to her patient, but she refuses to go under the knife because she needs time to train someone how to care for her son if the worst should happen. Her listing of all the things she has to remember is heartbreaking, but her love for her son is incredible. "I don't get to just think about myself anymore."

Lexie is afraid she will be cut since she let Tom escape, but she comes up with a brilliant plan. Even though Tom's spleen is healing itself, she suggests convincing both Tom and his mother to go into surgery together, so that his mother can be saved. Tom again fears camera implantation, but Bailey solves that by pricking her finger and showing Tom that she is indeed human. The two go hand-in-hand into surgery.

The emails go out, and none of our major characters get cut. (Though Debbie Downer Yang adds an annoying "yet" to keep the paranoia going.) Intern Steve makes it, but his wife Megan gets cut, along with three-quarters of his intern class. Nurse Olivia (best known for giving half the hospital syphilis) also gets cut.

At home, Arizona and Callie make their relationship official, which means no job in Portland. The downside, Callie is going to have to grovel, since the Chief already caused her to leave Seattle Grace once. Karev and Izzie cuddle on the bed as she tells him how during surgery she forgot about the cancer and George being dead. He tells her she's an amazing doctor, but he just wants her to take care of herself. Meanwhile, Owen, Derek and Mark decide to get the cutbacks off of their ladies' minds, by taking them out to hit a few baseballs. Hey, whatever works.

Premise: Surgical residents at a Seattle teaching hospital hone their bedside manners on and off the job in this medical drama, which parlayed a cushy initial time slot (post-'Desperate Housewives') and a hefty dollop of sex and romance into immediate success. Indeed, in the opener, intern Meredith Grey sleeps with attending Derek ('McDreamy') Shepherd the night before starting work at Seattle Grace and discovers the next day that he's her boss. Their romantic ups and downs became the series' keystone.
