Everybody has a secret in this episode of Grey's Anatomy. Meredith urges Derek not to tell the board about the Chief's drinking problem. Cristina is fearful that Teddy will tell Owen about her "offer." Arizona lies about not having had the chicken pox so she doesn't have to be around itchy Callie while she suffers. And Mark, Lexie and Alex all battle with revealing the details of their hookups. Before the hour is up, most of the beans have been spilled, causing a variety of consequences. Let's explore them individually.
"It was like recycling. It's good for the environment."
That's Lexie's rationale for going back to the well with Alex. Unfortunately, she regrets the decision and Alex doesn't have time to think about it because....Izzie's back! She wants to talk things through with Alex, especially now that she's found an open residency in Tacoma and wants to settle back into her life. When Izzie asks if Alex has moved on, he admits to sleeping with someone, but Izzie says they will get through it.
Lexie, on the other hand is afraid to tell Mark. So she tells Callie about her indiscretion instead. Mark's guilty conscience gets the best of him as well, and he similarly admits to Callie that he slept with Addison in L.A. Callie, knowing both secrets, tells him to lie to Lexie, but when he can't Lexie is relieved that they basically "canceled each other out." Mark, ever the hypocrite, however, can't look at Lexie the same way.
"I love you so much I almost hate you."
As for Izzie and Alex, when her PET scans come back clear, she is excited to move forward with her plan to get her life back in order. Alex admits that he loves Izzie and he's happy for her, but he wants her to go to Tacoma, be happy, and not come back. He said he realizes he's a good enough man that he deserves someone who will stay. Izzie is heartbroken, and even though Meredith can get her job at Seattle Grace back (more on that in a minute), she refuses and disappears back to Katherine Heigl's leave of absence.
"He makes scratching look sexy."
In the night's lighter storyline, Arizona pretends she never had chicken pox in order to keep Callie at distance. "I wanted to stay in the sexy part of things," Arizona says, while watching Mark scratch Callie's itch. (It wasn't as dirty as that possible euphemism makes it sound.) Arizona ultimately realizes it was a mistake, and she cozies up next to her gal by episodes's end.
"People do matter. I matter. We matter. I won't let you toss me aside."
Cristina's story also introduced the episode's subtext: Whether the doctor's of Seattle Grace are willing to choose surgery over love. While Izzie is the lone holdout for love, Cristina waffles because she feels guilty for offering Owen to Teddy. After Teddy saves a singer's lung with a risky thermal chemo treatment, Cristina realizes that Teddy understands what it is to choose a gift over love. (The patient in question said he would rather die than lose the lung to cancer and not be able to sing). So Cristina stops waffling, and tells Teddy she didn't misspeak. "I choose my gift," she says.
Teddy gets hammered and spills Cristina's dirty little secret at the bar, but Owen storms Cristina's castle. Rather than simply being upset that Cristina cares more about surgery, he is defiant in his attempt to prove that he is important to her. Whether Cristina chooses her gift or not, Owen is clearly choosing Cristina and won't take no for an answer.
"McDreamy is being a McAss."
Finally, Derek wants to go to the board about the Chief's drinking, but Meredith "calls Post-It." Derek honors his role as husband until he realizes the Chief is going to perform a complicated surgery by letting Meredith assist wit the hardest part of the procedure. Bailey is ticked that the Chief is giving her operation to Meredith, and Derek decides, with Owen's advice, that doing the right thing is what saves the most lives. He tells the board, and in order to get Meredith on board, he offers to re-hire Izzie.
At the end of the day, the Chief is removed and Derek is named interim Chief of surgery. Meredith says Derek shouldn't believe he did this to help the Chief but because he chose his career over love. "So did you," Derek says, noting that Meredith was willing to do a fifth year procedure before she was ready, even though she knew it could only happen by letting an alcoholic in the O.R. "We're the same," Derek says.
