There was a giant hole — both in our hearts at having to wait for the return of Grey's Anatomy and in the actual Season 8 premiere.
As an enormous sinkhole ripped through the streets of Seattle, the hospital was rocked with even more drama: Meredith was fired, Cristina decided to have an abortion, Webber stepped down as The Chief and Alex died — yes, died! Let's check out the top moments from the season opener:
1. Meredith's baby-napping: Meredith's misdeed finally caught up with her. Not only was she fired from Seattle Grace, but husband Derek was nowhere near forgiving her. The tension between them was not missed by their social worker, who set off an investigation into Zola's living arrangements. In response, Meredith decided to baby-nap her own baby. It's dark and twisty-meets-desperate mother Mer — and we like her!
2. Alex's dead: He messed up big time last season when he ratted Meredith out, but he certainly paid the price when Cristina accidentally stabbed him with epinephrine. Who knew surgery could be comical? He was brought back to life swiftly, though, and even covered for Meredith by acting like he was running tests on Zola when she had been baby-napped. See? Alex is a good guy! It's a shame the social worker took the baby away anyways.
3. April's inability: Poor April Kepner, the girl can't lead a group of residents for the life of her. Even though she was elected Chief Resident, that doesn't mean anyone actually listened to her. It's nice to see her struggle, especially when her tried and true checklist system failed and the surgeons nearly gutted the wrong patient. Even when the docs are assigned a "Gunther," a case in which the residents are forced to work together on their own, it was Jackson who stood out as the leader instead of her. At least she didn't kill anyone!
4. The Chief's done: It was time. The Chief knew it. We knew it last season. It's time for a change at Seattle Grace and what better timing for Webber to step down than to selflessly take the fall for Meredith so she could keep her job. And he secretly taught Bailey the ins and outs of his clinical trial so he could pass it over to her. Dr. Webber, surgeon, is back in the game!
5. Cristina's decision: We hate to say it, but Meredith was absolutely right about Cristina: She is not the mothering type. Cristina made the right decision, for her. But none of it would be, in a sense, justified had Meredith not explained to Owen that her own mother, former famous surgeon Ellis Grey, did not want a daughter and it ruined Mer's life. *Sniff* We're OK, just some dust in our eyes.
