Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Love Turns You Upside Down" Season 9, Episode 8

It's intern hour on Grey's Anatomy!

The five newbies are featured this week as they take on procedures on their own, deal with horrific patients and get pulled into the personal lives of the other Seattle Grace doctors. So, which intern's story line was the best? Below, we discuss what the interns had to endure and grade them by which of their stories were most interesting. Disagree with our assessment? You know where the comments are!

Leah and Stephanie: Turns out, when Leah's not obsessing over Alex, she's a total kiss-ass. In order to keep up, Stephanie decides to play her game and suck up to Cristina as well, resulting in her getting to scrub in on a surgery. But when the tables are turned and Leah gets a surgery, Steph is tasked with delivering bad news to some parents landing her the next surgery. Their competition goes too far when they nearly kill a patient, leading to them getting banned from the OR. B: We missed the inner-intern competition of the old days.

Shane: The usually bright and shiny doc is initially excited to be on April's service, until he learns that they're only "whittling," i.e. cutting out lumps and bumps all day. April takes out her frustrations of being "the dud" on Shane, but they find common ground over a gross growth. His time with April does lead to him getting on Derek's surgery, and he thanks April by continuing to help with lumps and bumps. C+: At least his next story line of helping out with Derek's surgery will give him a chance to shine.

Jo: Alex throws her to the wolves, forcing her to take on a pregnancy case while he's in surgery. However, the baby isn't breathing when it's delivered, and Jo stands there like an idiot whining that she doesn't know what to do. This is the day the chief should've finally fired her, but alas, she's still around. Her biggest complaint: Alex calls her "Princess." She's not so much a princess when she attacks a patient's mother to prevent the parents from leaving their one-day-old baby behind, leading to her reveal that she grew up in foster care. It would mean something if she wasn't such a brat about it. D: We're over it.

Heather: Tina Majorino takes center stage this week as Heather takes on trauma with Meredith. Well, Meredith actually puts her on sister duty, telling her to call each of Derek's sisters (Nancy, Amelia, Liz and Kathleen.) Nancy hung up on Heather, but Lizzie says she may be able to donate a nerve for the surgery on Derek's hand, which would seem like good news except Derek is pissed and wants Heather to call his sisters back and put the kibosh on everything. When Heather inadvertently learns about Meredith's pregnancy, Medusa makes sure she'll never tell anyone. But Heather finally snaps when she gets stuck in the middle of  a Mer/Der argument. Cue Lizzie's (Neve Campbell) arrival — and she doesn't seem to like Mer very much. A-: Heather has turned into our favorite intern.
