Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Flight" Season 8, Episode 24

[Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Grey's Anatomy.]

The Grey's Anatomy finale was... so many things it's hard to even finish that sentence. Shocking. Heartbreaking. Frustrating. Nauseating. (You can fill in more blanks down in the comments.)

After Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Mark, Lexie and Arizona crash-landed in the middle of the woods on the way to Boise, the doctors found themselves stranded with no hope of rescue for at least four hours. As Meredith went off in search of the missing Derek, who had been sucked out of the side of the airplane while still in the air, Cristina and Mark set to removing Lexie from underneath a large section of the plane.

Unfortunately, that would never be. With the lower half of her body crushed, Lexie was a goner no matter what the doctors did. In denial, Mark tried to tell her everything would be OK, that they would someday get married, have kids and she'd be a great surgeon. Cristina, however, knew the end was near, and found Meredith so she'd have a chance to say goodbye to her little sister. Again, that would never be. Mer and Cris arrived too late since Lexie had already succumbed to her injuries. (Damnit, I hate being right in this instance.)

Farewell, Little Grey. We had grown to love you. In fact, I recently re-watched her first real episode, when she needed Dr. Shepherd's help at the hospital and realized she had met him at Joe's bar. Needless to say, Meredith wasn't happy since she was always Derek's "girl at the bar." But Lexie had truly come a long way. She'd once loved George, had a fling with Alex, dated Mark, then Jackson. Though she ended up technically alone, Mark was there to hold her hand as she breathed her last breath. Later, he even said he was ready to die so he could join Lexie in the afterlife. Since this was very Lost-like, I assume there's a bright and shiny church where Lexie is now waiting alongside George, Ellis, Reed, Charles, etc.

Most importantly, Lexie had finally really become Meredith's true sister, which was even more heartbreaking to watch as Meredith sat by crying, realizing that nearly her whole family was gone. It was even more disheartening to watch when Arizona and Derek also learned Lexie's fate.

As for the other marooned docs, Mark nearly died, and he's still very close to doing so. Cristina and Meredith were able to treat his cardiac tamponade in true MacGyver fashion. Arizona suffered a seriously broken leg with a bone sticking out, but was later coughing up blood, which doesn't bode well. Once Derek was found, Meredith had to use a tourniquet tight enough to stop the bleeding, but not so tight that he would lose his hand. Plus, she safety-pinned the giant gash in his arm. Gross much? That's exactly where the doctors left off, trying to use their last match to keep the fire going — both went out swiftly — and regretting that the flare gun didn't work earlier when a helicopter flew over. The real gut punch? Earlier in the day, Owen asked for all his calls to be held, which means he never got the messages from Boise hospital alerting Seattle Grace that their doctors had never arrived. Good job, Owen!

Back at the hospital, Dr. Webber planned to say goodbye to the residents with a farewell dinner in their honor, though each of them were not looking forward to going. Alex was pissed because Arizona had pulled him off her service, though he tried to leave her a voicemail saying that she had made him the doctor he was, and now he had to prove he was great without her. April was still freaking out over failing her boards, essentially losing her job and her virginity, which made her a bad Christian. What was worse: Jackson felt bad about having sex with her, and even worse about deciding to go to Tulane hospital, far from Seattle Grace. Even Teddy got fired from the hospital so she could take an Army job elsewhere.

The one bright moment? Ben and Bailey are going to get married, but who knows whether they'll be in Seattle or Los Angeles next year. In fact, who knows what anyone will be doing, or what the fate of the docs will be, which is greatly frustrating. We at least wish we were the residents who did make it to Webber's dinner or even Callie, who was waiting scantily clad on her and Arizona's bed: Blissfully unaware that the end of the world has arrived.

UPDATE: Creator Shonda Rhimes has confirmed that both Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver will not return to Grey's Anatomy next season. Check out her statement in full below:

"Okay. Callie said it best tonight: Life changes in an instant. Turns on a dime.

This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things. We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy).

I know this season's finale had some surprises for viewers and the exit of Kim Raver was one of the big ones. But Kim's series option was up and she was ready to give Teddy Altman a much-needed vacation. It's been a pleasure working with someone as talented and funny and kind as Kim; everyone is going to miss her terribly. I like to imagine that Teddy is still out there in the Grey's Anatomy universe, running Army Medical Command and building a new life.

I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my Grey's family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future.

I'd write more but I'm honestly too sad. I don't like life changing in an instant and turning on a dime.

Thanks for watching Season Eight. We are, as always, grateful that you joined us for the ride."
