Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Going, Going, Gone" Season 9, Episode 1

It took us the full four months since last season's jaw-dropping Grey's Anatomy  finale to finally cope with Lexie Grey's death and the Season 9 premiere shattered us again. (Shonda Rhimes, expect the bill for our therapy.)

Before you go any further, remember, this is a recap so there will be spoilers — and maybe grab a box of tissues and a gallon of ice cream before proceeding.

The season finale finally revealed the fates of two characters whom Rhimes had kept painfully silent about all summer: First, Mark Sloan... died. Yes, it should've been expected considering Eric Dane was leaving the series, but it was heartbreaking nonetheless. Extra props go to Patrick Dempsey and Sara Ramirez, who never went over the top in grieving.

Grey's Anatomy: Where were we and what's next?

Second, Arizona... lost her leg. That's right, her left leg, which was severely damaged in the plane crash (bone was sticking out, people!), had to be amputated once the doctors were rescued. Arizona has always been the pillar of happiness at Seattle Grace — lest we forget the sneakers with wheels! — and her bitterness at the close of the episode have us worried about the state of Calzona this season. Still, we're darn glad she's not dead!

To find out what happened to the rest of the Seattle Gracers, check out a rundown of the premiere's most poignant moments below:

The new kids: The Season 9 premiere was almost a direct parallel to the series premiere, even down to the music (Love Rilo Kiley's "Portions for Foxes"!) and the plucky fish-out-of-water interns, including Jo (Camilla Luddington) — who was totally Meredith-meets-George/007-meets-Izzie — Heather (Tina Majorino) and Shane (Gaius Charles). Initial thoughts? We like the Fab Five better.

Mark's fate revealed: Mark did make it back alive from the plane crash, but he's been in a coma ever since. Unfortunately, in his will, Mark stated that if after 30 days (at 5pm that day), he showed no signs of recovery, he was to be taken off life support — even Callie's dirty talk could not get him to wake up! Throughout the premiere, we see home videos of Mark, including at Derek's wedding to Addison, a sex tape with Callie, a surgical video for Jackson, and Calzona's nuptials, where he revealed on tape he hoped to someday marry Lexie. After being taken off life support, Mark dies a few agonizing hours (for the other docs, at least) later.

The new Nazi: Move over, Bailey: There's a new head b---- in charge. Meredith is not dealing with the loss of Lexie very well and becomes the new Nazi, though the new interns call her Medusa. She's even in charge of the intern appendectomy, during which Jo follows in the footsteps of 007. She also can't deal with the loss of Mark and decides to hop on a plane to visit Cristina shortly after his fateful DNR goes into effect. However, she can't handle being on a plane and freaks out before take-off, forcing the flight attendants to escort her off the flight.

Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes talks Season 9: Time jumps, new locations and new docs!

Derek's hand: After having his hand seriously mangled in the plane crash, Derek seems on a quick road to recovery, heading back into surgery with Callie. As a large amount of the hospital staff waits to hear him say, "It's a beautiful day to save lives," his hand goes numb, making him realize he may never do surgery again.

Jackson is... dealing: Though he's now a surgical fellow, he's essentially replaced Mark as the plastics head while his mentor is in a coma. Still, Jackson runs everything by a comatose Mark first, going to him for advice about all his surgeries. As 5pm neared, Jackson decides against something he and Mark previously "discussed," letting Mark know that though he's taught him a lot, it's time for Jackson to strike out on his own. Plastics posse for life!

Cristina's woes: Unable to get on a plane, Cristina has pretty much been confined to Minnesota since, we assume, shortly after the crash. But her new hospital isn't quite what she was expecting; all the other docs are almost robotic and are not cutthroat-competitive like her, and Dr. Thomas (Williams Daniels) has driven her insane with inane stories. In fact, she's forced to take R&R in order to loosen up before returning to the hospital. (That's not going to happen. We give Cristina four episodes tops before she's running — or driving — back to Seattle. Just us?)

A happy Bailey: Bailey and Ben have been dealing quite well with a long-distance relationship, putting the on-call rooms to good use. It's hilariously hypocritical, considering that in the pilot, she told all her interns that on-call rooms should only be used for sleeping. Her romps have also landed her a new nickname, BCB (aka Booty Call Bailey). Hey, whatever makes you happy!

Karev's a player: Alex is grieving by, well, sleeping with all the new girls, including Heather (Seriously, it's no wonder her role was being kept under wraps). Still, he does feel a sense of guilt for Arizona taking his place on the airplane. His decision to simply stay in the room while Callie cried made us tear up. And yet, when all was said and done, Alex was ready to leave Seattle Grace for Hopkins! He did end up staying behind once he learned Arizona's replacement would've ended his exchange program -- and after Meredith screamed at him. Looks like Alex is here to stay!

Owen's alone: It seems like Cristina and Owen haven't been in contact much, which is the extent of what we learned about our second favorite couple in the premiere. But we digress. After coming across Jo crying in the hall, Owen reveals to her that the appendectomy surgery is designed to see her fail. Jo complains that Meredith is just plain mean, probably because of some plane crash she heard about. But Owen quickly retorts that Meredith is being tough on them in order to make the interns stronger, and if she can't handle that, she should leave. But his harshness makes him realize that he needs to nurture those under him, including April, who he had failed to take care of. He flies out to April's hometown to ask her to come back to Seattle Grace.

Callie is... not dealing, and Arizona is... Throughout the episode, it seems Arizona has perished, with Callie finding a dark corner to cry in after meeting the new peds attending. But it turns out Arizona is very much alive. After losing Mark, Callie begs Arizona to get out of bed because she can't handle life alone. But Arizona refuses, screaming back, "How the hell am I supposed to snap out of this when you cut off my leg?" Well, that's a game-changer...

Are you sad that Mark died? Were you surprised by Arizona's amputation? What do you think of mean Meredith? And are you hoping Owen and Cristina just get back together already? Hit the comments! Also, go here for more scoop on the season!
