Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Put Me In, Coach" Season 8, Episode 7

In this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, Seattle Grace is put to the test — but it isn't a difficult surgery or a malpractice suit that threatens their pride: It's a game of softball against Seattle Presbyterian. As the docs get ready for the big game, Alex sets out to get Zola to her rightful home with Derek and Meredith, Cristina deals with more menial tasks and Lexie finds herself jealous of Mark's new girlfriend. Check out the top moments from this week's episode:

 1. Doctors' skills: It's not often that we see the docs outside of Seattle Grace, other than random romps in the sack. The change of scenery to the softball field doesn't help the docs' skills as the entire SGMW team is pretty terrible. Even Owen's scheming ways to hire former baseball pro Henry as a ringer don't help when they get crushed by Seattle Presbyterian.

2. Meredith's secrecy: Unbeknownst to Bailey, Meredith has secretly been working on the diabetes clinical trial in hopes of finding out why it has been failing. At odds with Bailey, who knows Meredith is up to something, the two finally confront each other on the softball field in a drag-out shouting match. (Meredith happens to be drunk during the game out of sheer boredom.) When their argument escalates, the old Chief steps in and lays down the law: They have to work together now. Enemies forced to work side by side? Can't wait for next week!

3. Sloan's new hookup: Mark is finally back in the game... and we're not talking about softball. The doc has found a fling on the other team (traitor!), which seriously irritates Lexie. On first base (now we're talking about the game), the new hussy yells that Lexie can't pitch — so Lexie proves it, by lobbing the ball straight at her chest. Though Lexie insists she thought the girl was trying to steal second, Jackson can tell that she's jealous of Mark's new gal pal. Ruh-roh, trouble's on the horizon for Jaxie.

4. Derek's frustrations: Tired of the wait-and-see approach — he and Meredith just have to wait-and-see to find out if they'll get custody of Zola — Derek refuses to take on a patient who wants an easier, less risky surgery that will see them back in the hospital eventually. Determined to prove his approach will work, Derek practices on a dummy that he renders deaf, brain dead and paralyzed. Derek finally figures out how to do the surgery after a little batting practice on the roof of the hospital with Owen and Lexie, who inadvertently cracks the case. At least Little Grey had one good moment.

5. Cristina's graduation: Teddy sticks Cristina on an angioplasty, a longwinded and boring procedure that frustrates her to no end. When Meredith inquires why Cristina isn't doing actual surgeries, Teddy insists that this is about Cris learning respect, which she does. Instead of butting in when Callie and April's patient takes a turn for the worse, Cristina lets April take the lead. Showing she put the patient above herself, Cristina has now graduated into a real surgeon, Teddy says. Her reward? Making a bucket list of her favorite surgeries for Teddy to get her. Finally, Cristina is back in the game!

6. Alex's mission: After finding out that Zola's medical case will be transferred to another hospital because it's a conflict of interest, Alex starts tracking down anyone that can offer information on her status. He even goes so far as to bribing a caseworker to track down the judge on Meredith and Derek's custody case. Sneaking into the judge's chemo treatments, Alex implores the judge to finally look at the case. Even though Alex could've been put up on federal charges, everything turned out for the best as the judge decided to finally give Mer and Der a hearing date. Hopefully Zola will be home soon!
