Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Loss, Love and Legacy" Season 8, Episode 5

Mama Avery has come to town!

In this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, Jackson's mother, Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) has come to Seattle Grace to perform a groundbreaking penis transplant surgery — and if that's not awkward enough for Jackson, Catherine sets her sights on finally getting April to lose her virginity. Plus: Baby Zola is rushed to the hospital, and Alex has to keep it a secret! Let's check out the top moments from Thursday's episode:

1. Catherine Avery's penis: The arrival of Jackson's mother is made that much more uncomfortable by the fact that she's planning a penis transplant surgery at Seattle Grace. She also takes a pass at the Chief and has no qualms about telling April, the virgin, to finally get laid. Oh please, can Catherine come back for the holidays?

2. Alex's loose lips: When he gets a page that Zola has been rushed to the hospital, he selflessly excuses himself from the competition for Catherine's surgery. Though he's not allowed to tell Meredith and Derek about Zola's condition, at the first sign of trouble, he decides not to keep his mouth shut out of consideration for their feelings. Finally, Alex looks out for someone other than himself.

3. Christina's shakin': It's been a while since we've seen the often intense doc dancing around her kitchen, so it was pleasant to see her open up and enjoy herself — and enjoy Owen, if you know what I mean. She's also shaking because she's been desperately trying to build the strength in her left hand, so much so that she shakes herself right out of the competition for Avery's surgery. We wish she would shake off the anti-baby feelings because she was super-cute with Zola.

4. Bailey's breakup: I'm sure it took more than a look at Ben's butt to cause Bailey and Eli to split, but it's fun to see Bailey put in uncomfortable positions once she learned Ben misunderstood her and was waiting for her to piece herself back together after the shooting. She ends the non-relationship with Eli, insisting to Ben that it wasn't because of him. Sure, Bailey. Keep telling yourself that. (For the record, his butt is breakup-worthy!)

5. Mark's inadequacies:  It's not often that we see Mark feel inferior to anyone, but if anyone could make him feel that way, it's Catherine Avery. Not only is she peeved that Jackson passed up a chance to work with Derek in neuro, but she feels that Jackson isn't living up to his revered family name — which is partially Mark's fault. Mark does get a chance to prove his worth after April mangles the surgery. See, Mark Sloan isn't just a sleazy doc who sleeps around. He's also a great surgeon! Only took six seasons to prove it.

6. Lexie's getaway: In order to prevent his mother prying into his relationship, Jackson ships Lexie out of town to visit her sister. Ever the detective, Catherine starts to hunt down information on Lexie, even questioning Meredith on her sister's abilities. It's sweet that out of everyone, Mark defends Lexie's skill the most. Well, we know why he's doing it, but does he?

7. Meredith's breakdown: After learning that Zola is fine after surgery, Meredith breaks into tears, the likes of which we haven't seen from her since her dark and twisty days. Unfortunately for MerDer, their social worker gets one look at them on the elevator and realizes they know about the surgery, which could jeopardize their custody case. We wish the social worker overheard them singing to Zola through the phone at the end. (Tweet #giveMerDertheirbaby!)

8. Arizona's motherhood: When Alex points out that Arizona would be in the same position as Meredith and Derek if something ever happened to Sophia, Arizona insists to Callie that they get a piece of paper that proves Sophia is also hers. "She calls me mama," Arizona says desperately. As always, we're not crying. Never!

9. Andy's blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo: Cougar Town may not be coming back until January, but the stars of the ABC hitcom will be making appearances on various shows. First up is Ian Gomez, who briefly appears within the first five minutes of the Grey's episode, just as Ben approaches Bailey for the first time. Look out for Courteney Cox and Christa Miller, who can be seen as a lesbian couple on Private Practice.
