Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Take the Lead" Season 8, Episode 3

The residents of Grey's Anatomy face off when they take on their first solo surgeries, which reveal many of their shortcomings. Meanwhile, Owen has taken over as Chief of Seattle Grace and Cristina is overly happy about the news — but that's not a good thing. And Derek and Meredith? Feels like this pair is doomed. Let's check out the top moments from Thursday's episode:

1. Owen's the new boss: Many of the doctors are taken aback by the new change in leadership, but none more so than Bailey, who was always the Chief's right hand man. While Owen is met with hostility from Bailey, Cristina is over the moon for him. Actually, they're both excessively pleased about everything and falling over themselves to make each other happy so they can avoid rehashing the abortion.

2. The resident's wager: The residents decide to place a bet on whose solo surgery is most successful, with the loser having to teach skills lab for the whole month. It's a fun call back to when George O'Malley did the first appendectomy in the pilot episode and they all wagered on whether he'd lose (That's how he got the fateful nickname "007.")

3. Arizona's comedic side: The wheelie shoes are back, and with it, some good-hearted comedy. Upon learning that Alex has traded in a peds case for a bowel resection, Arizona actually jokingly falls asleep midsentence. It's a fun, light Arizona, which is nice to see after last season's hardships.

4. Derek and Meredith's hunt for Zola: You'd think losing their child would unite them, but it's the exact opposite. Instead of going all dark and twisty, though, Meredith very bluntly lays it on the line when she asks Derek if they would even stay together if they don't get Zola back. Their animosity is brought into the OR where Derek disagrees with her technique, but she comes out successful. Despite this, he's still being a jerk. Sorry, but we're sick of dark and twisty Derek. We get it, he's pissed, but you married Meredith, now deal with her!

5. Cristina's skills lab: Forced to do a simple appendectomy, which Cristina cannot remember how to do, she hits the skills lab and gets the interns to explain step-by-step what to do in the surgery under the guise of teaching them. She makes one of the interns cry when they can't figure out what's next, which is ironic when Cristina forgets what comes next in the actual surgery. It's OK, Teddy doesn't know either, and a nurse has to help them finish.

6. Alex's (lack of) bedside skills: We don't like mean Alex. He first decided not to do a peds case, which he's a pro at, and then he blew off his own patients and left the grunt work to April, all while being the grumpy Alex we knew back in Season 1. It turns out, he was actually just afraid of screwing up, which is unfortunate when he does, but we do like vulnerable Alex.

7. Avery's gun shy: Since he became the Gunther last week, Avery decided to take on a difficult plastics-peds case, but Arizona immediately pulls him in lieu of having Sloan do the surgery. Avery decides to prove his worth on a pig (don't worry, no pigs were really harmed in the episode!), and Arizona agrees to let him do the surgery. He backs out last minute after realizing that this surgery would forever change this child's life. For the record, he lost the bet.
