Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Unaccompanied Minor" Season 7, Episode 22

In the season finale of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith deals with the fallout of Alex revealing she tampered with the Alzheimer's clinical trial, Cristina discovers she's pregnant and Owen names the next Chief Resident.

The episode opens on Meredith and Derek preparing for their meeting with the social worker. Even though the McMansion hasn't been completely built, they're mapping out where Zola would possibly be living.

Once they get to the hospital, Owen reveals to Derek that Meredith has tampered with the clinical trial. Derek brings her in to see the Chief, since she has asked to be treated not as his wife, but as a colleague. The Chief begs her to refute the charges, hoping Alex has been exaggerating, but she declines to elaborate on what she actually did. The Chief says he now has to investigate the claims and Meredith will likely lose her job. Meredith hunts down Alex, telling him to move his stuff out of her house.

An airliner has gone down so it's all hands on deck. While Teddy makes it possible for Henry to stay at the hospital so he'll be first in line for surgery after the catastrophe, Cristina confronts Alex for ratting Meredith out, saying she's the one person who has always been there for him. Alex finds Owen, explaining that he only wanted Meredith out of the running for Chief Resident, not for her to get fired, but it's too late now.

While inquiring whether a blood donor patient might be pregnant, Cristina comes to the realization herself that it's been far too long since her last period. Lucy does an ultrasound, confirming that she's pregnant. Cristina reveals the news to Owen, who is ecstatic, but she says she doesn't want to have a baby.

Meanwhile, the doctors at the hospital are bored waiting for the plane crash victims, so they dish on who they think should be Chief Resident, but Owen hasn't decided yet. Mark also takes this opportunity, after finding out why Jackson dropped out of the Chief's clinical trial, to tell Jackson that he's pulling himself out of the race for Lexie's heart.

While they continue to wait, the Chief asks Alex for a written account on what he actually saw Meredith do. The Chief and Derek go on to grill Meredith, but she refuses to tell them what she did, saying that if they don't know, the trial is still viable. After receiving Alex's account, the Chief figures out that she tampered with Adele's packet. The Chief notes that he basically encouraged Meredith to do it, so they'd both have to be fired. The Chief decides to just suspend Meredith.

Owen posts the news that April has been named Chief Resident, which prompts Alex to yell at him. Owen says Alex would have been the Chief Resident had he not outed Meredith, but now he will be the most-hated doctor at Seattle Grace for doing it.

Owen tries to convince Cristina to keep the baby, offering to take a leave of absence from work to raise the child, that it wouldn't have to be Cristina's problem. She insists that she's not a monster, and if she did have the baby, she would love it, but she just doesn't want it. He asks her to think about it, if only for him.

After waiting ages, no patients show up from the plane crash, meaning no one survived. Dr. Perkins assists the doctors as they reveal the news to the waiting families.

After the trauma of telling the parents, Teddy decides to catch up with Henry for comfort. He ends up screaming at her, saying that letting her go is the most painful thing he's ever done — and that's saying something! He is not her buddy or her security blanket, he's the man who's in love with her and is losing her to another guy and another country.

Derek tells Meredith that she has messed up the whole clinical trial. Even though she apologizes, she says she would do it again the same way if given the choice. Derek says he doesn't know how he can raise a child with someone who doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, so he asks for some space.

One piece of good news? There is actually one survivor from the plane crash, an unaccompanied minor (the title of the episode!) Since she has no family, the families of the victims decide to stay at the hospital to support her. Once the mother of the unaccompanied minor arrives, the other families comfort her, but decide not to tell her that her daughter is the only surviving passenger as to not spread the grief.

Teddy realizes that the first person she had gone to was Henry, not Andrew, after the trauma. She rushes to Henry's room, asking him to stand up so she can kiss him. After the pair lock lips, she admits that she's falling in love with him.

After Alex, Zola's doctor, gives her the all-clear, Meredith is granted custody of her new child, but is completely overwhelmed because she doesn't even have a car seat, let alone a husband to help out. She persistently calls Derek, who has temporarily moved into the unfinished McMansion, so she can share the news, but he refuses to answer. Meredith goes home to an empty house, including Alex's cleaned-out room, but still insists to Zola that they're going to be OK.

Mark decides to check in on Lexie, but like Henry, she says she doesn't want to be in love with Mark anymore, that he needs to let her go so she can fully be with Jackson. He concedes, knowing this will be better for her. Meanwhile, Jackson congratulates April on becoming Chief Resident, but notes that she really won't have friends anymore since she's everyone's boss know.

Cristina arrives home, telling Owen to remember how much he loves her before revealing that she's made an appointment to terminate the pregnancy. He pleads with her to consider having the baby for him, but she doesn't budge. He screams for her to get out because she has denied him a say in the decision and therefore a say in part of their marriage.

Cristina goes to Meredith's house, confiding that she is planning to get an abortion, so Owen kicked her out. Meredith, surprised not to be filled in, asks Cristina to help with the baby, but Cristina insists she just wants to lay down. As both of their relationships are falling apart, Lucy finds Alex at the bar, begging him to tell her not to go to Africa, but he tells her to go to hell instead.

Premise: Surgical residents at a Seattle teaching hospital hone their bedside manners on and off the job in this medical drama, which parlayed a cushy initial time slot (post-'Desperate Housewives') and a hefty dollop of sex and romance into immediate success. Indeed, in the opener, intern Meredith Grey sleeps with attending Derek ('McDreamy') Shepherd the night before starting work at Seattle Grace and discovers the next day that he's her boss. Their romantic ups and downs became the series' keystone.
