Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "This Is How We Do It" Season 7, Episode 17

Ever since it was announced that Grey's Anatomy would do a musical episode, fans have been wondering how the ABC medical drama would pull this off?

In this week's episode, we learned exactly how. We'll get to that, but first, let's take look at what else happened at Seattle Grace this week:

MEREDITH and DEREK:
Meredith and Derek have a new clinical trial patient, whose son moved back from London just to be there for her. While they're going through the tests with her, the Chief tries to convince Derek to let Adele into their clinical trial. However, that would compromise the trial. After their first patient drops out so her son can move back abroad with his boyfriend, Derek and Meredith test a reluctant Adele. She doesn't make it into the trial by one point, which Adele thinks means she doesn't have Alzheimer's, but it actually means that it hasn't progressed enough. Derek decides to try to get her in anyway.

THE CHIEF, BAILEY and JACKSON:
Bailey is working on a patient who has diabetes. She and Jackson convince the Chief to let her into his new diabetes trial, even though it hasn't been given the green light by the FDA. While Bailey explains the surgery to the patient and her husband, Eli undermines her by insisting she explain the side effects, making Bailey feel like he was accusing her of hiding something. Since the patient is going to die if she doesn't get the surgery, the Chief has the duo do it anyway, and fortunately the woman survives just as they learn the clinical trial has been given the go-ahead. When Bailey exits the hospital, Eli calls a truce, saying she may be the man within the walls of Seattle Grace, but he's the man outside.

APRIL and STARK: In the month between now and the last new episode, April and Stark have been spending time together, but she doesn't believe it's anything more than them just being friends. Alex even accuses her of trying to screw her way to the top after Stark refuses to let him work on his service. Stark asks her to come over to his place for a movie, which prompts the other residents to joke that she's going to sleep with him. She decides to tell Stark that she enjoys spending time with him, but just as friends. He responds by saying he never wanted to just be her friend.

CRISTINA, TEDDY and HENRY:
After going for a jog, Henry is rushed to the hospital with chest pains. The Chief questions whether Teddy should be involved with the case since they are married, but she insists it's fine. Once he's put on pain medication, however, Henry spills that he really does care about her, which forces the Chief to have Cristina do the surgery so there's no conflict of interest. Though he crashes during the surgery, Cristina saves him and he later admits to Teddy that he meant every word when he was drugged up. Despite Cristina's great save, which may have helped her in the race for Chief Resident, the Chief has passed the torch to Owen to make the selection, which is a huge conflict of interest for the married couple.

ALEX and LUCY:

Alex has moved his trailer to the Seattle Grace parking lot so he can get a leg up in the Chief Resident competition. Because of this, he decides to crash Callie's baby shower for food, where he runs into Lucy. Alex assumes that since she came over to talk to him, she really does like him. She later approaches Meredith to find out if Alex really is that much of a Neanderthal, to which she replies that Alex has been through a lot in life, so that's all just an act. Lucy later finds Alex at his trailer, explaining that he hasn't made a move on her because he is intimidated by her, so she kisses him.

LEXIE and MARK:
Despite the awkwardness between her and Mark, she attends Callie's baby shower, where she runs into Mark. She reveals that she's seeing someone else, but not who it is. He realizes that she's hooking up with Jackson once they leave the baby shower together.

CALLIE, ARIZONA and MARK:
During Callie's appointment with Lucy, Mark says he wants to know the sex of the baby, but the ladies have outvoted him. Arizona and Mark then plan the baby shower, which Callie is really excited about. While Mark tries to add things like a scrapbooking table and a onesie decoration station, Arizona says he's not the Callie whisperer, and doesn't know everything she wants. Callie ends up agreeing with Mark's choices, much to Arizona's chagrin. To make up for that, Callie gives Arizona a baby shower present, which is a weekend away at a bed and breakfast.

And now the moment we've all been waiting for...

While heading out for their weekend away, Callie gets a text from Mark. Arizona, frustrated that she can't seem to get Mark out of their lives, tosses Callie's phone into the backseat. The very pregnant Callie takes her seatbelt off to retrieve her phone. Just as Arizona makes a sweet but completely unexpected marriage proposal to Callie, they are hit by a truck and the screen fades to white.

So now we know, Callie, who was not wearing a seatbelt, will be the focus of the musical episode because of the car crash. How do you feel about this turn of events? Discuss in the comments below.
