Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" Season 7, Episode 14

In this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith and Lexie's father, Thatcher Grey, checks into the hospital with stomach pains — and a young, new girlfriend. Elsewhere, Alex butts heads with obstetrician Lucy and Mark asks for Jackson's help with Lexie.

The Chief offers Meredith a place on his new clinical trial team. Using Meredith's mother's research, he wants to cure diabetes. "It's your birthright, Meredith," he says. "It's your mother's legacy to you." Meredith is now faced with a big decision on whether to stay with Derek's Alzheimer's trial or start this new one. On top of that, Meredith's father has checked into the hospital. While Meredith is usually at odds with her absentee father, it's the other Grey who is most upset with him.

Lexie takes on Thatcher's case, and is shocked to learn that he has a twentysomething girlfriend with tattoos named Danielle. When Thatcher starts to feel pain again, Danielle tries to butt in and help, but Lexie screams at her. Lexie worries that her dad is going to abandon her like he did to Meredith, who defends Thatcher, saying the situations are different, and tells Lexie to grow up.

Meanwhile, the multi-parenting continues with Callie, Arizona and Mark. They're now even dictating what she eats and drinks, but softening the blow by calling it a vote. Of course, she's outvoted and is no longer allowed to drink coffee, which doesn't help when she takes on the case of a YouTube failer, who has broken nearly all of his bones by smashing into a wall. Arizona is constantly trying to keep her from drinking coffee during her stressful day.

Like in the pilot, Alex starts off on the wrong foot with Lucy by calling her a nurse. After he calls a brain-dead patient a "turnip," she bans him from the peds floor. Since Lucy told Arizona what Alex said, he can't even get back on the case. Later, while Alex and Lucy watch the surgery from the gallery, they both start to freak out when the baby codes, but get to share a happy moment when Teddy and Arizona are able to save the wee one. Alex later tries to ask Lucy out for a drink, but she cuts him off before he even gets the words out.

Jackson gets to be on Mark's service for the day, but that mostly entails finding out what's wrong with Lexie for him. After repeated rejections, Lexie finally vents her frustrations to Jackson. She's upset that Mark didn't even ask her opinion, but rather just dumped the news that he's having a baby on her. This makes her realize that she's the one being a jerk to her father's girlfriend and not the other way around. Jackson decides to lie to Mark, saying Lexie didn't open up to him after all. Despite this, Mark lets him scrub in.

Lexie later finds some common ground with Danielle. Following which, she agrees to go to drinks with Jackson the next night. Sparks are starting to fly!

After a crazy, caffeine-deprived surgery, Callie returns home, coffee cup in hand, and announces that the voting system is changing. The baby and her vagina both get votes as well, meaning Callie gets three votes. Her first vote: Mark gives her a foot rub.

The Chief tries to convince Meredith to join the trial by saying that Ellis owes Meredith something great. After an unsuccessful Alzheimer's trial, Meredith tells the Chief that he knows Ellis best and he should do the trial alone. Derek and Meredith celebrate that she's staying on the trial by taking another shot at having a baby, if you know what I mean, and I'm sure you do.

That's it for this week's Grey's. How do you feel about the chemistry brewing between Jackson and Lexie? Do you think Alex and Lucy will hook up? Hit the comments with your thoughts.

Premise: Surgical residents at a Seattle teaching hospital hone their bedside manners on and off the job in this medical drama, which parlayed a cushy initial time slot (post-'Desperate Housewives') and a hefty dollop of sex and romance into immediate success. Indeed, in the opener, intern Meredith Grey sleeps with attending Derek ('McDreamy') Shepherd the night before starting work at Seattle Grace and discovers the next day that he's her boss. Their romantic ups and downs became the series' keystone.
