Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Slow Night, So Long" Season 7, Episode 9

After Derek wins the grant he needs for his clinical trial, his fellow doctors take him to the bar to celebrate. They arrive to find that Cristina, who quit the hospital, is trying her hand at being a bartender, though that doesn't go over quite as planned. Elsewhere, Meredith, Lexie, April, Jackson and Alex must deal with a hectic night shift.

MEREDITH, LEXIE, ALEX, JACKSON and APRIL

The young doctors of Seattle Grace awake in the evening to take on a night shift. Jackson, however, wakes screaming, asking where Charles is. (RIP Dr. Percy).

Meredith takes on Dr. Stark's cases. One in particular has a pushy mother who works as a nurse in another hospital. Though Dr. Stark said Meredith won't need to contact him, she does. He returns, but immediately chides Mer calling him back for practically no reason. When the patient does take a turn for the worse, the Chief shows up to help expedite things for Mer.

When Dr. Stark doesn't answer his page, Meredith and Alex take the child to the OR. Alex, who is certainly becoming the next Dr. Ross (George Clooney), goes through with doing the surgery. Dr. Stark later screams at Alex and Meredith for hijacking the surgery, but the Chief looks on behind him, smiling back at his pupils.

Jackson and Lexie take on Owen's trauma cases. He worries that Jackson may be suffering from PTSD, but Jackson insists he's fine. One of their patients is missing a leg from a train vs. car accident, so they call Owen to come back, but it's too late. During the surgery for the other boy, Lexie must update their parents. She's faced with telling them they've lost one of their sons. During the surgery, Jackson loses it, but it actually focuses him. Like the brother who survives, Jackson will always feel guilt for being the one who lived over Percy.

April takes on a case where a young couple has super glued their arms together so the boy won't have to move away. The patients are pleased when her first treatment doesn't work. April asks Bailey for ideas, but she's wasted after a night at the bar. A drunken Bailey considers calling Ben, her ex, to get her needs fulfilled, but instead tells April not to sleep with Alex. Even though she's wasted, she tells April to use soap and water on the patients, which works.

DEREK, MARK, BAILEY, CALLIE, TEDDY, OWEN and CRISTINA

To celebrate Derek getting the grant for his Alzheimer's clinical trial, the docs take him to Joe's bar, where they discover Cristina has gotten a job. Cristina starts off by making an Alzheimer's-themed shot, and even takes it with them. Between serving drinks, Cristina spends the night getting wasted with a bachelor party.

When Teddy tests out Internet dating, she finds herself back at the bar after a horrible first date. She blurts to Callie that Arizona is an idiot, but that Callie should join her in Africa. Callie inquires whether Arizona has mentioned her in the letters she sends to Teddy, but Dr. Altman skirts the topic.

Mark suggests Callie gets over Arizona by finding someone new. She strikes out with one girl, leading to a drunken romp in the sack with Mark. Based on the look on Callie's face post-coitous, she is very upset she made such a mistake.

After being fired, Cristina starts getting frisky with the bachelor party. Derek stays to make sure she doesn't do anything stupid. Owen arrives, unperturbed to see his wife like this. Instead, he swings her over his shoulder, takes her home and holds back her hair while she lives the night in reverse.

Some other quick thoughts:

--Jackson clearly wants to become the best doctor he can to honor the memories of his friends who will never achieve that goal.

--Alex is becoming a standup peds surgeon, despite early protests.

--Cristina can't be helped; she has to help herself, which is likely why Owen isn't mad by her crazy antics at the bar.

I've shared my thoughts, now you hit the comments with your own. Do you think Cristina can pull it together? Will Derek succeed with his clinical trial?
