Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Valentine's Day Massacre" Season 6, Episode 13

Grey's Anatomy gets in the Valentine's Day spirit with an episode about love connections — and a couple of disconnections as well. Arizona spends much of her time playing cupid with Bailey and her "gas man" crush, Ben Warren. Elsewhere, Meredith struggles with the idea of being Derek's arm candy now that he's the Chief of Surgery. On the flip side, Teddy want to "un-ring the bell" she rang when she told Owen she loved him and Sloan decides to give her baby away, which breaks Grandpa Mark's heart. Throw in an arm growing out of a patient's side and a new hair color for Lexie, and you've got a pretty packed episode. So, let's get to it.

The doctors are thrust into action as a roof collapse at a local restaurant sends many lovebirds into the ER. (Luckily, most of these doctors seem to hate Valentine's Day, so they are happy their plans are scrapped.) Bailey rebuffs Ben's invitation to dinner, but not without Callie and Arizona noticing that cold-hearted Bailey actually likes the guy. So, Arizona plays matchmaker in the middle of a complicated surgery, much to Bailey's chagrin. However, Bailey finally admits to Ben that she likes him, and the reason she is rude is because he makes her nervous and unable to talk. So she accepts his invite to dinner, though she doesn't make any promises about how great the conversation will be.

Speaking of dinner conversations, Meredith and Alex treat Emile, head waiter, who for 15 years has served a customer that he pines for. He, however, has never been able to tell her how he feels, something that was complicated when she got married. (The poor sap even hid the engagement ring in the crème brulee.) However, as he tells the story, the object of the waiter's affection — who just so happens to be in the next bed — hears the whole thing. (This scene was really well performed by the guest actor.)

However, when Meredith asks the lady what she was going to do, she tells a different tale. She knew Emile had feelings, and she went to the restaurant each week waiting for him to speak up. He didn't, and she made a choice to marry the other man. "It's a choice I keep making every day," she says.

This revelation makes Meredith, who throughout the episode insists to April (who has become Derek's secretary of sorts since being hired back) that she is Dr. Grey, not Mrs. Shepherd, think twice about not attending a fund-raising breakfast with Derek. "I'm a surgeon," she says. But after her chat, she decides to "choose" to attend the breakfast, even if the sign does say Mrs. Shepherd. (Though she claims she's owed a lot of sex in return.) Sadly, it's not a completely happy ending for Emile and his lady: Although her husband makes it out of surgery, she is visibly shattered when she learns that Emile has died on the table due to bleeding in the brain.

Elsewhere, Mark is shocked when he decides to hit on the new blonde, but discovers it's Lexie. Alex digs her new hair, and Avery says that changing her hair color won't change her. (He gives a long-winded metaphor about how he was the pretty one in his family of smarty-pantses and to prove to them that he was also capable of using his brain.) So, Lexie takes his advice and stands up to Owen and Mark, who decide they can't reattach a dishwasher arm because the stump isn't healthy enough to proceed. She suggests attaching the arm to a blood supply elsewhere in the patient's body while the stump heals, in order to save the arm from dying. The patient is weirded out when he see that she made him a freak, but he later understands that she was following through on his desire not to lose his arm.  Also, she celebrates/distracts herself from Valentine's Day angst by again sleeping with Alex in a vacant room.

Mark, meanwhile, heads home to talk to his daughter after she reveals that she wants to give the baby away because she's not ready to be a mom. Mark offers to adopt the baby, for whom he's already built a crib and who he claims has the "Sloan nose." Callie also offers to pitch in, so Little Sloan agrees. But when Callie catches her leaving Mark's apartment, she understands little Sloan's feelings about the baby and doesn't stand in her way. Mark arrives home to see Callie dismantling the crib, and he is speechless. Will their friendship be rocked by Callie's decision to let Sloan go?

Finally, Teddy confronts Owen about the way he's been treating her — or more accurately, the way he hasn't. She randomly blurts out all the recent details of her life until Owen loses it. Teddy says she just misses her best friend, but Owen claims that ever since she told him she loves him, he feels like he's cheating on Cristina by talking to Teddy. So, Teddy decides to put things back the way they were. She tells Owen that she's going to un-ring the bell, and make him her best friend and Cristina her student. Yang is on board (she gets to do a valve replacement!), but Owen insists that bells can't be un-rung. "I know, but I can try like hell," Teddy says.
