Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Beat Your Heart Out" Season 5, Episode 13

The secrets at Seattle Grace are quickly mounting in this episode of Grey's Anatomy. Izzie secretly puts the interns to work on uncovering her health issues, Lexie's bursting at the seams to let everyone know about her and Mark, and Derek can't quite seem to keep a lid on the engagement chatter.

For starters, it looks like Meredith and Cristina are back to being best buds again. In fact, Cristina is back to reading her version of Harry Potter books: Mer's mom's diary. Among the new facts Cristina has managed to uncover is one juicy tidbit that indicated the Chief was planning on popping the question to Mer's mom. That just might explain why the Chief had so many grand suggestions for Derek on how to propose to Meredith.

Almost blowing Derek's secret is a pregnant patient by the name of Jen (Jennifer Westfeldt, who bares a striking resemblance to Lisa Kudrow), who accidentally ran her husband (Ben Shenkman) over with a truck. As it turns out, Jen's husband isn't the only one in need of medical attention when the mom-to-be suffers a seizure and doctors discover she has a brain aneurysm.

In other patient news, Warren (Peter MacKenzie) and his wife end up at Seattle Grace after a sexual experiment goes awry. I'm still not sure what he had stuck in his tushy tonight, but whatever the doctors removed sure did create a loud clang in the pan. Having said that, I'm now more intrigued than ever to know what suggestion No. 9 was in that magazine article!

One thing I was keeping track of tonight was how long it took for O'Malley to surface. For those of you not watching the clock, it was exactly 30 minutes. It's really a shame they haven't managed to do more for T.R. Knight's character, and I will certainly be sad to see him go if he does end up leaving this season.

On a cheerier note, I really enjoyed the interaction between Cristina and Owen tonight, from Owen flirtatiously suggesting Cristina should wear her hair up more because he likes the look of her neck, to the beautiful piano music that played when the two walked down the hall together and brushed hands ever so briefly. Of course, the romance took a jarring turn at the end when someone from Owen's past resurfaced at Seattle Grace, sending Owen into panic mode. However, it looks like this most recent setback hasn't scared Cristina away, as she chose to embrace Owen in his frenzy and calm him down. Though I wonder if this budding relationship will ever get off the ground once the identity of this mystery woman is revealed.

Speaking of revealing things, Lexie can't wait to tell everyone about her new beau, Mark. Unfortunately, he would still prefer to keep things under wraps, but McSteamy did seem pretty close to confessing to Derek that what he has with "Little Grey" is "true." Too bad Derek unknowingly shut Mark down before he could get the actual words out.

Derek, on the other hand, was super busy this week getting advice from everyone on how to propose to Mer. Despite saying that he thought Mer wouldn't appreciate a grand gesture (as the Chief suggested), Derek went with what he himself described as a clichéd approach by decorating their bedroom with tons of roses and candles. I have to agree, I don't think Mer is really the strewn rose petals on the bed kind of gal, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, we may never know because just as Derek was putting the finishing touches on the room, his frantic ex-wife, Addison, called him to tell him she needed him right away. How's that for timing?

Now, when Meredith got home that night, I half-expected her to open the door to her bedroom and find all of those roses and candles still carefully in place. They were not. Derek had taken the time to carefully remove every romantic indication that this night was meant to be a special one before he left. Ah, but he missed one rose petal tucked under a pillow that Mer just happened to find! What makes this discovery ten times worse was that Derek had told Mer earlier that day that he "had to work" and couldn't have dinner with her. Put two and two together and you can see where Mer's thought process was going when she found that petal. Was Derek bailing on dinner with her in order to be with another woman? Well, you could say yes. While he definitely wasn't romancing another woman, he did leave Mer to help Addison. I know, I know...I'm being too technical, but Derek's still got some major explaining to do as far as Mer's concerned.

Also looking for an explanation this week was Izzie. Secretly, she had Sadie running all kinds of medical tests on her in the hopes that something might be uncovered in the process. So far, the only thing Sadie has managed to find is a case of anemia. Should Izzie be relieved? She seemed to be at the end of this episode, but surely her medical mystery is not over yet, though her ghost visitations might be now that Denny is MIA.

Other notables this week: Cristina and Bailey hugging it out with Dr. Dixon (in order to calm her down after a doctor/patient session set her nerves off); the Chief telling Bailey she's getting a promotion; Dr. Robbins suggesting Bailey's true calling is in pediatrics and Callie finding a new fan when she least expected it.

So, rose petals aside, how do you think Derek should propose to Meredith? Should he pop the question at the first place they met (the bar), like Jen suggested this week? Will Mark finally go public with his Lexie romance? And what's next for Callie and Arizona?
