Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Stairway to Heaven" Season 5, Episode 12

This week on Grey's Anatomy, Izzie finally realizes why Denny has come for her; Owen asks Cristina for a second chance at a first date and the death row patient at Seattle Grace finally checks out.

Rarely does Grey's break tradition by featuring a narrator other than Meredith, so when Denny's voice kicked things off this week I knew we were in for a bumpy ride! Finally, after weeks of hearing Denny tell Izzie, "I'm here for you," she realizes that his poetic presence in her life has much darker roots. Izzie is sick, but we still don't know what plagues her, and now that the cat is finally out of the bag, it looks like Denny may be gone for good.

Meanwhile, William (Eric Stoltz) needed some serious medical attention after beating his head against the bed rail, but at his request, Meredith covered for him so that he might die now at Seattle Grace instead of at his execution in a few days. So, imagine her shock (or mine, for that matter) when Cristina walked in to William's room and the first words out of his mouth were, "Help me! I don't want to die."

Regardless of William's true reason for changing his mind, he did eventually "smell the lemons," and (again at Willaim's request) Meredith was there to be a familiar face in the crowd on his execution day. The experience was obviously a difficult one for Mer, so it was good to see Derek there waiting to pick her up outside of the prison, despite the ill will he felt toward William. It was also moving to hear Meredith try to explain to Derek her reason for wanting to be there: "I know you don't understand me. I don't understand me. I wanted to show him compassion..."

However, Meredith wasn't the only one caught up in William's spider webs. Bailey also found herself trapped between doing what was right (proceeding with William's life-saving surgery), and doing what she so desperately wanted to do: save Jackson's life by allowing William to die at the hospital and harvest his organs for a transplant. The moment Bailey barged into the OR to tell Derek to stop working on William, I honestly thought she was just having a daydream brought on by her recent lack of sleep, but it actually happened. Of course, in the end, Bailey was reminded by Derek that she took an oath to help people, regardless of their situation and Bailey backed off.

Luckily for Jackson, there was another man at Seattle Grace with viable organs for a transplant, and the surgery took place in the nick of time. So far, it looks like the procedure was a success.

On a lighter note this week, Mark experienced a penile fracture brought on by extracurricular activities in the on-call room with Lexie. This subplot became all the talk among the interns, and the story will certainly go down in Seattle Grace history. Among the more notable moments was Sadie rescuing Lexie from an awkward moment by taking the blame for the incident, and later seeing Lexie curl up next to Mark to stroke his hair and make him feel better. These two are too cute!

Last, but not least, we have Owen and Cristina. Their attempt at a first date certainly fizzled last week, especially given the fact that Owen passed out naked in her bed after showering fully clothed in her bathroom. But that didn't stop him from asking for another chance. After hearing Cristina tell him, "You've got some problems; some big problems...," I was sure she was ready to tell him to take a hike. But it would seem Cristina likes a challenge because she agreed to give him another shot. Let's hope the second attempt at a first date goes smoother...

Some of my favorite lines from tonight:

• "You're like the guy who graduated from high school who still hangs out on the football field." —Izzie
• "She's in the car and she won't stop crying." — Derek to Cristina
• Cristina's response: "Did you propose?"

So, who out there thinks they know what Izzie is ailing from? And now that we know Derek is planning on proposing to Mer, how will he do it? Chime in and sound off!
