In this episode of Grey's Anatomy, the Chief announces the winner of the solo surgery award; Callie develops a new crush on an intern and Sadie drops a bomb on Lexie.
After weeks of speculation, the Chief is finally ready to reveal the name of the resident who has been picked to embark on their first solo surgery. There's just one catch, the winner who was chosen unanimously by the attendings has been disqualified by the Chief. Yep, had Yang only spoken up sooner about the intern's secret society, she would have been the one flying solo in the OR this week, but that little mistake cost her big time. Instead, Yang was awarded the honor of choosing her replacement.
While Cristina struggled with her decision, the returning Dr. Dixon advised her to keep her emotions out of the decision-making process, while Dr. Hunt advised her to go with her gut. In the end, Cristina chose Alex because "he made the best case."
Meanwhile, there were plenty of other things going on at Seattle Grace to keep everyone else occupied.
This week, two sisters landed in the ER after a stint of text-messaging at the wheel caused an accident. A sibling argument ensued as the doctors examined the girls and realized the eldest girl, Holly, was suffering from more than just bumps and bruises. The kicker here is that the younger sister, Emma, didn't realize at the time how serious the situation was and shouted the dreaded words, "I hope you die," as they wheeled Holly away for further tests. It was a moment that said it all. From that point on we knew Holly wasn't going to be around long enough to earn a lecture from her parents on the evils of cell phone use in the car. Meanwhile, Emma struggled to find a way to take back the final words she had thrown at Holly. At this point, it was Meredith who stepped in and helped Emma work through her grief by reminding her that regardless of what had happened, her sister still loved her. In retrospect, it was impressive to see the usually detached Meredith so emotionally connected to the situation. I think Derek would have been proud.
In other surgical news this week, Mark was charged with the task of helping a woman (quite literally) find her voice again after cancer left her speechless five years prior. Communicating only by computer and by post-its, it was clear that the woman's husband was fed up with the lack of intimacy in their relationship. However, the woman remained indifferent, even after the surgery took place she was unwilling to try and speak. Finally, Lexie picked a private moment to approach her and encouraged her to let go of her fears and simply try. Before long the woman was able to utter, "Hi," and Lexie was beaming with pride that the surgery was a success.
So, where did Lexie go next? To Mark's place, of course, to celebrate! Yep, Lexie was all smiles after Sadie told her that she suspected Mark of having a crush on her and before long, Lexie was standing in his apartment asking him to "teach" her as she disrobed for him. At this point, maybe I was being naïve, but for a brief moment I actually thought Mark was going to resist her and insist on keeping things platonic...at least for a little while longer. Though he did seem to struggle with the idea of keeping his promise to Derek, it didn't take long for these two to show each other their birthday suits. I can't wait to see what happens next with these two. Will Mark blow it off at work the next day? Or might this fling actually evolve into something more?
Also getting some "mind blowing" action this week was Izzie (with Denny). For once, I would just like someone else to "see" Denny as he roams the hospital halls with Izzie. I know, that's never going to happen, but it would be a riot. Instead, Denny continues to only exist in Izzie's world and now his presence is causing her to withdraw from work. At some point, this whole thing's going to have to come to head and I can't see how it's not going to end up in some sticky mess, especially now that Alex has proclaimed his love to Izzie. And by the way, how great was that moment? I was so hoping she wouldn't let him down when he asked her to assist him in the solo surgery. Thankfully, she came through just in time.
The low point for me this week was Dr. Dixon and her curt bedside manner. I realize she has Asperger's Syndrome, but the way she talked about harvesting that 16-year-old girl's organs in front of her family just irked me. Then later, I found myself shaking my head when the Chief asked Dixon about joining Seattle Grace and she responded with, "Have your board make me a better offer." All I could think was, I really hope they don't.
So, this week we were left with Alex getting ready to make the first incision in his solo surgery. Who wants to take a stab (bad pun?) at what will happen next? Will he succeed with flying colors, or will he freeze up and bail?
And let's not forget the budding relationship between Callie and Sadie! Will these two end up being more than just friends? Something about Callie's glow makes me think so...
