This week on Grey's Anatomy a new doc arrives, but she's not a big fan of Seattle Grace; an old friend of Meredith's joins the staff and ruffles some feathers; and Izzie fears she could be seriously ill.
One week after the big Callie/Erica fight, we're still left to wonder what the official story is behind Hahn's departure. While this kind of closure may never come, it's hard not to expect something more. Even when Burke left, we were offered more of an explanation regarding his whereabouts outside of Seattle Grace. For now, all we have to go on is Cristina's elation over Hahn's departure and Callie's emotional struggle to deal with the fallout.
Meanwhile, Meredith reunites with an old friend, Sadie (Melissa George), who happens to be joining the hospital as an intern after a stint at the morgue. With the rekindling of this old friendship comes some jealousy from Cristina, who is left commiserating with Derek over her new third wheel status. The self-pitying stops, however, when they enter Seattle Grace and Cristina reminds Mer (in that snarky way that Cristina does best) that Sadie is just an intern and needs to learn her place.
Also arriving on the scene for the first time this week is Dr. Dixon (Battlestar Galactica's Mary McDonnell), a well-known surgeon who likes to stick to the facts and the rules. Remind you of anyone? Like, maybe, a recently departed doctor? At any rate, we find out that Dixon's "by-the-book" demeanor could be the result of a neurobiological disorder known as Asperger's Syndrome. My guess is that there will be more on that to come, but as long as Bailey can keep getting the Chief to declare new rules, things will work out just fine. There's just two snags - Dixon is onto Bailey, and she's not really digging Seattle Grace.
Much to my happiness (and Izzie's frustration), Denny resurfaces for another round of hauntings. This week though, Izzie takes the advice of another heart transplant patient (August Schellenberg) on how to be rid of her ghost once and for all - burn any possessions that the spirit can cling to. Before Izzie can get the fire roasting though, Alex catches her talking to herself as she leaves the hospital. At home he confronts her for about the third time that day and short of begging, asks her what he can do to help her deal with whatever it is she's going through. While I'm really enjoying this softer side of Alex, at the same time, I'm completely confused as to where this storyline is heading. Denny couldn't possibly be real, right? So, how is it that Izzie was able to touch him and more importantly, kiss him?
The one thing that stands out in my mind is how Denny kept telling Izzie that he was there for her. Was I the only one envisioning Denny as the Grim Reaper (albeit a very hot one), descending on the scene to claim a terminally ill Izzie? I guess it's going to take some time for this one to really unfold, but in the mean time, I'd like to hear what other theories some of you out there may have.
In other patient news, Mr. Miller (Ed Lauter), a homeless man contorted like a pretzel after an accident, was resistant to the idea of surgery, which created a lot of drama between the docs. Derek wanted to proceed before the patient could bleed to death, while Owen was adamant about letting Mr. Miller call the shots. With hopes that he could walk again with legs carefully crafted by Callie, Mr. Miller opts to partake in the surgery, but when he dies on the operating table, a slew of emotions are unleashed. Callie breaks down in the OR, crying for the first time since Erica's departure and later that night, Owen abruptly cuts Cristina off when she tries to offer him her condolences for the loss that occurred that day. Yes, there was also a very emotionally charged kiss between Cristina and Owen, but I have to admit I'm not impressed by Owen's gruff moves and I was happy when Cristina walked away.
Other things to note: Lexie and the interns practicing their stitching skills on one another in their "Secret Intern Society" and Mark's new nicknames for the Grey sisters ("Little Grey" and "Big Grey").
That's my two cents for this week. Now, I want to hear from you! What did you think of the arrivals of Sadie and Dr. Dixon? What is Denny doing here?
