Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Rise Up" Season 5, Episode 6

This week on Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Hunt gets under Cristina's skin; the residents compete for a solo surgery; Izzie can't shake a certain ghost and Dr. Hahn pushes the wrong person too far.

While recent news indicated that Dr. Hahn would be making an abrupt exit from Seattle Grace, it was unclear how such a drastic change of events could take place so quickly.  After watching this episode, it would appear as though there are still a number of loose ends. What we do know is that Erica lost it with the Chief when she found out about the Izzie/Denny heart theft that went virtually unreported and she has taken major issue with Callie's "kind of" lesbian status. What still remains to be seen is how that last fight she had with Callie will end up finalizing Erica's departure. Will Erica still file a report to have Izzie and Bailey investigated for the whole heart debacle that took place a while back?  Or will Callie's speech about people losing their jobs at the hospital force Erica to rethink her tactics and instead go "quietly into the night?"  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Overall, this was a pretty dark episode, given the tension that existed throughout Seattle Grace. Take, for example, the number of times Owen put Cristina in her place by singling her out and ridiculing her for not treating the patients with more respect.  Instead of getting in Owen's face immediately and fighting back, Cristina waited until the very end to take him aside and explain that her childhood experience is what makes her the great doctor she is and oh, by the way, she does remember the names of her patients. While I think I would have preferred to see Cristina take a feistier stand earlier with Owen, her more subdued approach proved to be more effective, as she was able to inadvertently influence McArmy (is that what we're calling him now?) to stay on at the hospital.

Providing some comic relief this week was George and "Robo-plastic" Stan. While all of the other residents bailed on the computerized dummy, George stuck with him, working tirelessly to keep the robot alive. Meanwhile, the Chief used a hidden camera to keep an eye on George's efforts and to secretly provide the robot's verbal reactions.  I have to admit, they had me going for a while.  I should have known no robot was really sassy enough to push Alex's buttons without some sort of human intervention. However, I did like how George remained in the dark until the very end, when Owen used Stan to inform the Chief that he would not be leaving Seattle Grace after all. George took it all in stride though, which is part of what makes him so endearing.

Now pardon me as I swoon over the return of Denny...He sure looks hot, despite being dead for the last few seasons!  Unfortunately, he didn't get to say much, but those expressive eyes and knowing smile spoke volumes instead.  At times his "presence" hindered Izzie's ability to focus on her job, but ultimately he helped her help the man who should have gotten the heart Izzie stole for him back in the day. What can I say, karma works in weird ways. And while it looked like Izzie was almost able to "let go" of Denny when Alex magically appeared in his place, it later became obvious that we have not yet seen the last of Mr. Duquette. No complaints here!

On a lighter note, Lexie tried to assist her fellow interns by providing cadavers to experiment on rather than each other. While it seemed like a better alternative at the time, it was a short-lived substitution. First, Lexie lost the cadavers to the residents who were busily trying to outdo one another for the right to helm a solo surgery. Later, when Bailey discovered the bodies, she was quick to put the practice out of business and demanded that the cadavers be returned to their proper places.

There wasn't much going on in the Mer/Der department this week, other than Derek's obvious dismay over the amount of girl talk Meredith and Cristina have been engaging in lately. Too bad Derek's brilliant plan to distract Cristina with a love interest like Mark didn't work out. Honestly, how anyone could be oblivious to flirtatious advances from that guy is beyond me, but I digress. In fact, when Cristina finally realized what Mark was up to, she shrugged him off in that "you're like a brother to me" kind of way and laughed as she exited the scene.

While I'm always game for a light episode with fun innuendos, I would say this edgier episode was still enjoyable. How did this one rate with all of you out there? What do you think about the way Erica left things and where will things go from here?
