Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "There's No 'I' in Team" Season 5, Episode 4

Derek ends up on the cover of a medical journal this week, but not everyone is singing his praises. Meanwhile, Callie depresses Mark by revealing the dirt on her first night with Erica and the docs at Seattle Grace take part in a highly publicized domino surgery.

This week's episode started off with a bang! Not only did we find out that Callie and Erica went "pretty much" all the way on their first date, but we also learned that the "5 second rule" also applies to organs dropped on a hospital floor! Sadly, this latter note reminded me that similar things probably happen in restaurant kitchens with food all the time, but let's not think about that, shall we?

Moving right along…

Let's start with Derek, who landed the cover of "Annals of American Neurology" for the clinical study he and Meredith worked on. Much to Meredith's chagrin, the journal failed to mention her name, leaving her completely uncredited for what became known as "The Shepherd Method." Understandably, Meredith was pretty peeved that Derek didn't attempt to acknowledge her in the article, nor did he think she had a right to expect that he would. Ouch! For a guy who just rocked the boat last week by digging through her mom's stuff and setting aside her diary, he sure didn't hesitate to spar with her again this week. Seriously, what was he thinking? Fortunately, some straight talk from Bailey helped Derek realize that even a simple "thank you" can go a long way.

Meanwhile, one person who was ecstatic over Derek's newfound notoriety (and the publicity it was bringing to the hospital) was the Chief, who was already excited about the impending domino surgery about to place. With Bailey heading up the project, 12 patients were set to take part in a kidney transplant at the same time. If any one of the 6 donors backed out at the last-minute, the entire project could be jeopardized, hence the reference to dominos. Unfortunately, when one donor learned that her husband, Stan (George Newbern), was having a fling with another donor, Lindsay (Saige Thompson), the whole procedure was almost compromised. But Bailey managed to work her magic and convinced the scorned wife to rethink her decision and continue with the surgery, which made it possible for all 6 patients to acquire the kidneys they desperately needed.

As for Callie and Erica, so much for their "let's take things slow plan," eh? Judging from the way they were making out after their first date, it seemed like things were going just fine, but the next day Callie sought out Mark for some much needed advice. As it turns out, Callie didn't really enjoy the physical aspect of her new relationship with Erica, which led me to think that Callie was starting to wish she had never taken things to that level in the first place. Not the case though. As Callie told Mark, she likes to be good at things and she wasn't comfortable going south of the border. So Mark, being the swell guy that he is, offered to demonstrate for Callie "how to do it good." Callie then rushed off to find Erica to try out her new skills. For their sake, I hope things go better this second time around.

Now, let's hear it for Lexie!!! She finally found the guts and the wisdom to stand up for herself and tell George what a schmuck he's been lately. In fact, Lexie delivered some of her best lines yet this season when she said, "I helped you study, I decorated your locker. You don't even see it…you don't see anything. I'm such an idiot and you're such a jerk. You didn't even think to ask for me. Screw you O'Malley!" Now we're left to wonder how George will react and keep in mind, these two are roommates, too. Will George realize he has feelings locked away for Lexie, or might this mean they'll both be apartment hunting for separate digs soon?

On another note, I was disappointed to see that Owen didn't resurface in this episode until the last two minutes of the show. I think we got cheated this week, but at least we got to see Izzie and Alex kiss and make up!

Other highlights from this episode include: Cristina's obsession over getting to keep a "kidney in a jar" after the domino surgery and later Derek giving such a jar to Meredith as a peace offering; Alex telling PJ (Leslie Odom Jr.) he needs to be there for his ailing dad before it's too late and Bailey using one word adjectives to describe the residents:

Meredith: Butterfingers
Yang: Annoying
Alex: Lazy
Izzie: Whiny

And some of the best lines:

Cristina: "You better not suck on purpose because I will know."
Meredith: "They can't call it the Shepherd-Grey method because then people would think you had help."
Cristina: "Cristina keeps Lexiepedia."

Now, I'm passing the keyboard over to you. Let me know what you thought of this week's episode. Will George try to get romantic with Lexie now? Will Erica and Callie find their groove, or might these two be better off as friends? And what about those promos for next week? All I can say is, Owen looks dangerous…
